Scattered showers are forecast across the Dominican Republic today, February 28, 2026, as a weather trough moves over the island nation. The Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (Indomet) has issued warnings for both coasts, urging caution for maritime activities.
According to Indomet, rainfall will initiate in northeastern and Caribbean provinces, including Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Samaná, San Pedro de Macorís, San Cristóbal, and Barahona, as well as the greater Santo Domingo area. The showers are expected to intensify in the afternoon as they combine with typical daytime convective activity, potentially bringing isolated thunderstorms and wind gusts through early evening. Provinces including Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, Santiago, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, San Juan, Dajabón, and Elías Piña are also expected to experience increased cloud cover and scattered showers.
Indomet is specifically advising individuals along the Caribbean coast and from Cabo Engaño to Cabo Cabrón on the Atlantic coast to exercise extreme caution when navigating and to avoid venturing far from shore due to abnormal winds and waves. The agency noted that conditions elsewhere along the Atlantic coast are currently normal.
Despite the anticipated rainfall, temperatures are expected to remain high, driven by warm southeasterly winds. However, mountainous regions will likely experience more pleasant temperatures. In the Greater Santo Domingo area, partly cloudy skies are predicted, with the possibility of scattered showers in the afternoon.
The forecast comes as the vaguada is predicted to continue increasing humidity levels into Sunday, according to Indomet. The agency has not yet issued any specific evacuation orders, but continues to monitor the situation closely.
