Marines’ massive demo closes I-5, fueling Newsom–White House feud

I-5 Freeway shut Down for Marine Artillery Exercise ⁤Sparks Political Clash

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.- A large-scale artillery exercise conducted by the U.S.Marines at Camp Pendleton on Friday‍ forced the complete closure⁢ of Interstate 5,a major transportation artery in Southern California, igniting a political dispute involving California Governor ⁣Gavin Newsom and the White House. ‌The closure, impacting tens of thousands of commuters,⁢ stemmed from ⁤a ‍scheduled live-fire ⁣exhibition involving M777 howitzer⁤ cannons firing west to east of the freeway, beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.local time.

The Marines‍ conduct⁤ artillery exercises nearly every week, utilizing systems ranging from High ⁣Mobility Air Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to M777 howitzers, according to Capt. dreibelbis.Live-fire training occurs regularly at both the battery and small-unit ⁤levels, with large-scale exercises‍ taking place twice annually‌ at⁣ the regimental ‍level. The M777 howitzer has been in use by the ‍Marines since⁤ 2005 and has seen combat⁤ deployment, including operations in Syria.

“This amphibious demonstration is what Marines and Sailors train for every day,” Capt. Dreibelbis stated. “Weeks of purposeful planning and rehearsals ensured success at every phase of execution, ‌underscoring the Navy-Marine Corps‌ team’s ability to safely conduct ‌complex ‍amphibious operations.”

However, the⁣ freeway shutdown⁢ drew swift criticism ⁢from California Rep. Mike Levin,‌ a Democrat representing the district encompassing Camp Pendleton. In a post on social‌ media, Levin asserted that public safety and‌ the Marine Corps’ reputation were “far more⁤ important than the political agendas of J.D. Vance or Pete Hegseth,” ⁣advocating for⁤ a balance between ⁣honoring the military and ⁢ensuring community wellbeing.

San Diego County Supervisor ⁤Jim Desmond, ‌a Republican representing Camp Pendleton and surrounding ⁣areas, also voiced concerns on social media, criticizing the situation as indicative of a lack of accountability and planning. “No accountability, no ⁢planning – just finger-pointing while everyday people sit in traffic, miss work, and watch their plans fall apart,” Desmond stated.

The incident has quickly become⁤ entangled in broader political ⁣tensions, with initial reports⁣ suggesting ⁣a connection‍ to a dispute between Governor Newsom and the White‍ House regarding military readiness and resource allocation. Further details are emerging as the situation develops.

California ‌to “fall Back” November 2, 2025: What to Expect

Los Angeles, CA – California residents ⁣will turn their clocks back ‌one hour on Sunday, november 2, 2025, as Daylight Saving Time ends adn the state returns to standard time. This annual shift, often referred to as “falling back,” means an extra hour of sleep but also earlier sunsets.

The change occurs at 2:00 AM on November 2, 2025, when clocks will be set back to 1:00 AM. This results in an extra hour of darkness in the evening.

Experts recommend several strategies ⁢to ease the transition:

* ⁢ Manual clock Check: ‍ While smartphones, tablets, and computers typically adjust automatically, manually‌ adjust wall clocks, microwaves, and some wristwatches on Saturday night ⁢before bed.
* ‌ Utilize the Extra Hour: Instead of oversleeping, use the ‍extra hour on Sunday morning for a relaxing activity to help your body ⁣adjust to the new light cycle.
* Prioritize Natural light: Exposure to ⁢natural light early on Sunday and Monday can help reset your biological clock.
* ⁤ Confirm meeting Times: When scheduling virtual meetings with individuals outside of California, especially internationally, verify local times due to potential time differences.

This time change is a recurring event, designed to better align waking hours with daylight, though its benefits are continually debated.Californians can prepare for ⁢November 2, 2025, and enjoy the extra⁤ hour with⁣ these tips.

Title: Artillery Fire Over I-5 Disrupts Traffic During Vance Visit

Artillery‍ Fire During Vance Visit‍ Prompts Highway Closure, Sparks Dispute with California Governor

CAMP‍ PENDLETON, Calif. – A planned‌ artillery exercise conducted during a visit by Vice President J.D. vance to ‌Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton led⁣ to the closure ⁣of a 17-mile stretch of ⁤Interstate 5 in‍ Southern California ⁤on‍ Saturday,‍ causing important ‌traffic ⁣delays and⁤ prompting a sharp rebuke ‌from Governor Gavin Newsom. The⁤ incident⁤ has ignited a debate over the balance between military training and public safety, and also the transparency surrounding the event.

The California Department of⁤ Transportation‌ (Caltrans) ultimately decided to close ⁢the freeway ⁤following practice firings Friday evening and a request from⁢ event organizers for signage warning of “overhead fire in progress.” The closure, impacting a major⁢ transportation corridor between San ⁣Diego⁣ and Los angeles, affected an estimated 80,000 travelers ‌and $94 million ⁣in ⁣daily ‍freight traffic, according to the ‌governor’s office.Passenger rail services running parallel to the I-5 ‌were also canceled for the afternoon.

“This ‍is all because of the White ⁤House-directed military event, that for the safety of the public, we need to shut down ‌the freeway‌ since they’re sending live ⁣ordinances over the freeway,” Caltrans ⁢spokesperson Matt Rocco said.

U.S. Marines⁣ Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis defended the exercise, stating in a statement that ⁢artillery fire occurs⁤ nearly every week at the base and that the drills did not endanger motorists. “Weeks of intentional planning and rehearsals ensured success at every phase of execution,” Dreibelbis said.

However, a spokesperson for Vance, William Martin, accused Newsom of misleading the public regarding the safety risk. “If Gavin Newsom wants to oppose the training exercises that ensure our Armed Forces are⁤ the deadliest and most lethal fighting force ‍in the world, then he can go right ahead,” Martin stated to The ⁣New York times.

The I-5 closure potentially added up to ⁣two hours to commutes between San Diego and Los Angeles. No mishaps were ‍reported in‍ connection with the artillery fire.

Music’s Healing Power: How Songs Can Reduce Pain and Anxiety

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 18, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Music May Offer a Non-Pharmaceutical Path to Pain Management, studies Suggest

WASHINGTON (AP) – Facing surgery or living with chronic illness?⁣ New research indicates a familiar playlist might be a surprisingly ‌effective tool for managing pain. Studies are revealing that listening to music – particularly genres people enjoy – can demonstrably increase pain tolerance, offering a simple, side-effect-free complement‌ to customary medical treatments.

While pain medication remains crucial, ‍scientists are‍ increasingly exploring the potential of music to activate emotional and memory centers in the⁢ brain,⁢ effectively⁣ distracting from discomfort. A recent study‍ found that exposure to preferred music genres – including ⁤classical, rock, pop, urban, and electronic – extended participants’ ability to withstand acute pain, as measured by tolerance to‌ very cold temperatures. Importantly, there wasn’t ⁢a‍ single ”best” genre; the key factor was personal preference.

“The more people listened to a favorite genre, ⁤the more they could endure pain,” explained Dr. emy van der Valk Bouman, a co-author of the research. ”A lot of people thought that classical ⁢music would help them⁤ more. Actually, we are finding⁤ more evidence that what’s best is just the music you⁣ like.”

the underlying mechanisms aren’t‌ fully understood, but researchers ⁤beleive ⁣familiar songs trigger memories and ⁤emotions, shifting focus away from pain signals. The act of choosing the⁢ music⁣ also⁤ appears to be significant, providing a ‌sense of control for individuals dealing⁢ with chronic conditions. Claire ⁣Howlin, director of the Music and Health⁣ Psychology Lab at Trinity College Dublin, co-authored a study demonstrating that allowing patients to select their⁣ own⁣ songs improved their pain tolerance.

“It’s one thing that people ‌can have control over ‌if they have a chronic condition – it gives them agency,” ⁣Howlin said.

Further research suggests that attentive listening is crucial. A preliminary study co-authored by ‍a Florida State psychologist indicated that ⁣daily, focused listening might reduce chronic pain. “Music has a way of lighting⁤ up‌ different ‍parts of the brain,” the psychologist explained, “so you’re giving people this positive emotional bump that takes their ‌mind away from the pain.”

Jazz singer Cecily‍ Gardner, of Culver City, California, shared her personal experience, stating, “Music reduces stress, fosters ⁣community, and just transports you to a better place.” Some doctors are now embracing music as a simple, accessible intervention⁣ with no known⁢ adverse effects.
