Title: GOP Redrawing of NC Districts Aims to Secure Trump Seat

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 23, 2025

North Carolina Republicans Redraw congressional Map, Targeting ⁤Democratic Rep. Jeff ⁣Davis

RALEIGH, N.C. – ⁣ North Carolina Republicans ⁤on Wednesday finalized a new‍ congressional ⁢map widely expected ‌to bolster the ⁤party’s chances of gaining a seat in the U.S. House, drawing immediate ⁢condemnation from Democrats who vow a legal challenge. ‌The redrawn map significantly alters‍ the 1st District,⁢ currently held by Democratic Rep.Jeff Davis, who narrowly won reelection‌ in a district also carried by‍ Donald Trump in 2022.

The legislation passed along party lines, despite protests from hundreds of Democratic and liberal activists who gathered at the state legislative complex this week. Republicans maintain the changes were made‌ to reflect the state’s ‌political leanings, citing Trump’s three victories in North Carolina presidential elections⁣ as justification for increased GOP depiction in Congress.

“Under the law and in conjunction with basically listening to the will of ⁣the people,” it is appropriate to adjust‌ districts, said Senate leader Phil Berger.

Though, Democrats⁣ argue the map is a ⁢partisan gerrymander designed to ‍benefit republicans and is racially motivated. ‌Former U.S. ⁢attorney General Eric Holder, leading the national Democratic party’s redistricting efforts, stated the⁢ map “will be challenged in court.”

Davis, who won his second term by less than 2 percentage points, called the ⁤new map‍ “beyond ‍the pale” but intends to run for reelection in 2026, either in the⁣ redrawn 1st ‍District or the neighboring 3rd District represented by GOP Rep. Greg⁢ Murphy.

The 1st District was one of 13 nationwide‍ where Trump won the presidential vote while ⁣a ‍Democrat held the House seat,⁢ according to the University of Virginia’s‍ Center for Politics. North Carolina ⁤Governor⁣ Roy Cooper, ⁤a Democrat, has indicated he would veto the map if⁤ he had the authority.

During Wednesday’s ‌debate,General Assembly police removed dozens of protesters from the House ⁤gallery who disrupted proceedings. House ⁢minority leader Robert Reives warned Republican colleagues they coudl become⁢ targets of the⁤ same partisan tactics being used against Davis ⁢if they deviate ‌from the party ‌line.

Massive bay‍ Area Protests draw‌ Over 224,000 Demonstrators‍ Against ⁤Perceived⁣ Authoritarianism

October 20, 2025 – Over 224,000 people participated in “No Kings” protests across the ⁤Bay⁤ Area on saturday, demonstrating widespread opposition to what organizers ⁣describe as authoritarian tendencies. The demonstrations, held in cities throughout the region, drew a diverse ‍crowd and represent a significant surge in activism, with national ⁤organizers claiming the nationwide turnout was 14 times‍ larger than both of⁢ Donald Trump‘s inaugurations combined.

Estimates for total Bay Area attendance ranged from a low of 162,000 to a high exceeding 224,000, according to calculations by the Bay Area News Group utilizing aerial photography analysis, crowd density assessments,⁣ and police counts.

San Francisco saw the largest concentration of protesters,‌ with Harvard University’s Crowd Counting Consortium estimating between 101,193 and ‍144,163 attendees, according to Indivisible San Francisco organizer Liliana Soroceanu.

Oakland’s march and rally drew an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 participants, more than double the approximately 10,000 who attended ⁣a similar protest in June, Indivisible ⁣East⁢ Bay reported. In San Jose, organizers with 50501 San Jose estimated between 10,000 and 15,000 people joined the presentation, a turnout ⁣comparable to ‌the 12,000 protesters who participated in June’s event.

“We were thrilled with the turnout. It showed that as ‍with in June ‌and‍ many of the⁣ prior ⁤events, people care deeply about these issues,” said James ‍Kuszmaul, an organizer with 50501 San Jose. “It is indeed ⁣also a sign of the severe problems that we’re trying to address – that the abuses of the ⁣Trump management have been so egregious that people ⁣still feel a need to keep turning out when many of the people at these protests have ‍never been to a protest before, have ‍only started⁣ attending protests this year.”

other cities also saw considerable participation. Walnut Creek’s protest attracted between 7,950 and 11,930 attendees, according to Kathryn Durham-Hammer of Indivisible ReSisters. ⁣Palo Alto’s parade and “democracy fair”‍ drew approximately 10,000 attendees, while a protest along El Camino Real between Sunnyvale and Palo Alto saw ⁢an estimated 7,500 participants.Smaller demonstrations were held in Berkeley (approximately 1,000 attendees)⁣ and Colma (around 500 ‌attendees), with San Mateo drawing a crowd of about 4,000.

“We are thrilled with the enthusiasm people‌ showed, the peaceful and joyful crowds, and the support of our communities,” said IdaRose Sylvester,an organizer with Together We Will, regarding the El Camino Real protest.

indivisible co-founders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg released a statement emphasizing the importance ⁢of the widespread participation. ”Authoritarians want us to believe resistance is futile, but every person who⁣ turned out⁤ today proved the opposite,” they said. “This movement‍ isn’t about a ⁣single⁣ protest; it’s about a growing chorus of Americans who‌ refuse to be‍ ruled. Trump may want a crown, but in this country, there ‌are ‌no kings.”

Baseball star Ohtani at the Dodgers: “Best performance in the history of this sport!” – Sports

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor October 21, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Dodgers on Brink⁢ of Championship, Fueled by ohtani ‍and Record Spending

ARLINGTON, TX – The Los Angeles⁢ Dodgers stand one win away from⁤ securing their ⁣first‍ World Series title since 2020, a feat spearheaded by Shohei‌ Ohtani‘s resurgence⁤ and a roster constructed with unprecedented financial‌ investment. Following a ⁣dominant performance against the ‍Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers lead the⁤ series 3-0, with Ohtani demonstrating a return to form after a challenging ‌playoff⁤ start.

Prior to ‌Friday’s game, Ohtani had managed just three‌ hits in 29 playoff at-bats.However, the Japanese superstar found his rhythm, contributing to a Dodgers offense already⁢ boasting ⁢Mookie betts, freddie Freeman, Michael ‍Conforto, Max Muncy, and Teoscar⁣ Hernandez. This potent lineup⁤ is supported by ⁤a‍ pitching rotation featuring Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers’ success raises questions about‍ the impact of financial disparity‍ in Major League Baseball and whether their strategy-reminiscent of Real Madrid’s “Galacticos” of 2002, plus Lionel Messi-is reshaping the sport.

The ⁣Dodgers’ total payroll this year exceeds $350 million, the highest in MLB. While Ohtani‌ is‌ officially listed at $2 million for the current season, his deferred ‍compensation brings the team’s average annual salary ‍commitment to just under $420 million. Critics argue the Dodgers have “bought” their⁢ success, exploiting ⁤loopholes in the collective bargaining‍ agreement and potentially undermining competitive balance. They ‍are the first⁢ team ‌since the 2000 New York Yankees to reach this point, attempting⁣ to defend an MLB title.

Dodgers manager⁤ Dave Roberts addressed the criticism directly on Friday, stating, “Well then: Let’s really destroy⁤ baseball with⁤ four more wins.”

The ‌team’s financial approach and on-field dominance are sparking debate about‍ the future of baseball, as ‍the dodgers aim ⁤to complete a championship run built on both star‍ power and substantial investment.
