The New York International Antiquarian Book Fair (NYIABF) returns to the Park Avenue Armory (643 Park Avenue, Manhattan) April 4-7. Universally recognized as the world’s finest antique book fair, the NYIABF will bring together nearly 200 exhibitors from around the world, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan , Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. OKAN in the Atrium of Lincoln Center
The Afro-Cuban group OKAN, led by singer-songwriters Elizabeth Rodrรญguez on violin and Magdelys Savigne on percussion, will be performing this Friday, April 5 at the Atrium of Lincoln Center (61 W 62nd St). This group’s upbeat music doesn’t fit into a single musical categoryโits boisterous drums, catchy hooks, and Spanish lyrics suggest it could be considered part of the โalterlatinoโ genreโbut its richly produced scores and penchant for high-flying improvisation evoke jazz fusion. โLas SinSombreroโ at the Thalia Theater
The Thalia Theater presents โLas SinSombrero flamencoโ, a flamenco music, singing and dance show based on the Spanish women artists of โLa Generaciรณn del 27โ known as โlas sinsombreroโ, who believed in a just society seeking autonomy, professional careers and intellectual freedom just like men. Directed by Yloy Ybarra, created and choreographed by Elisabet Torras and produced by รngel Gil Orrios, with the dancers Elisabet Torras and Juana Cala and the guest artist Victoria โLa Grianeraโ. โEarthโ exhibition at MoMA PS1
MoMA PS1 inaugurates this week the work of Guatemalan artist Regina Josรฉ Galindo, a monumental video call installation Tierra, which explores the connections between labor exploitation, resources, and human life in Guatemala. Evoking images of mass graves dug by machines, the work draws attention to the massacre of hundreds of thousands of indigenous people, mostly Maya Ixil, during the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996). Dominican comedy show
The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts (250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx) will be presenting the comedy show โEl Dominicano es un Joke,โ featuring some of the Dominican Republic’s most beloved first-generation comedians, Jockey Santos, Felipe Polanco โBorungaโ and Cuquรญn Victoria, along with Carlos Sรกnchez and Juan Carlos Pichardo. The audience will laugh as they listen to them talk about what it means to be Dominican, through stories, anecdotes, parodies and jokes. Presentation of Puerto Rican poetry
The House of Puerto Rican Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the writers Myrna Nieves and Yarisa Colรณn Torres, invites you to celebrate the publication of the book by the Puerto Rican poet Mairym Cruz Bernal, โThis way of flying in a balloonโ, published by Editorial Lรบdika. Cruz-Bernal is a poet, editor, translator, columnist and essayist, and among other merits, she chaired the PEN-Puerto Rico and directed the Puertas Group: Artistic-literary movement at the end of the century. Solar eclipse viewing party
On Monday, April 8, Green-Wood Cemetery (Fifth Avenue and 25th Street, Brooklyn) will be the ideal place to witness the last partial solar eclipse visible from New York until 2045. The event will begin at 1:30pm; The partial eclipse will begin at 2:10 pm, reach its maximum at 3:25 pm and end at 4:36 pm. There will be ongoing family activities throughout the afternoon, including viewing the eclipse through telescopes with amateur astronomers and projecting the telescope’s view on a large screen. In the Historic Chapel, attendees will be able to view the total solar eclipse as it appears on the path of totality, broadcast from NASA. On Monday, April 8, Tavern on the Green (entrance at 67th Street and Central Park West) will have its first Solar Eclipse Viewing Party, offering themed cocktails, iconic food classics like the Tavern Burger, an exclusively themed cookie in black and white and protective glasses to view the eclipse safely. The viewing event will take place on the patio of the famous Central Park restaurant, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and will feature an astronomer from Columbia University who will offer a 30-minute educational presentation to explain more about the eclipse, like why it happens and why this particular eclipse is so rare. The Public Hotel premieres two fifteen
The city has a new cocktail bar at The Public Hotel (215 Chrystie Street) following the recent opening of โtwo fifteenโ, a collaboration between Ian Schrager and Nur Khan, renowned New York nightlife professionals. The venue offers elevated and innovative drinks and will also regularly host surprise musical performances from today’s most cutting-edge artists. Award-winning master mixologist Charlotte Voisey was tapped to design the beverage program, which features champagne cocktails, modern twists on classics, vibrantly colored drinks and non-alcoholic options. The bar’s signature cocktail, the custom-made Gold Bellini, is inspired by the original Venice bellini of the 1940s. New on Broadway: The Notebook
Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novel, which inspired the famous movie โThe Notebook,โ was once revived to give life to a new Broadway musical. The production original tells the love story of Alie and Noah, two people from different worlds who share a life of love despite the forces that threaten to tear them apart, in a deeply moving portrait of the enduring power of love.
Produced by Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch, The Notebook features music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by playwright Bekah Brunstetter (writer and producer of NBC’s โThis Is Us,โ The Cake). The production is directed by Michael Greif (Dear Evan Hansen, Next to Normal, RENT) and Schele Williams (Aida, The Wiz), with choreography by Katie Spelman (Associate Choreographer on Moulin Rouge! The Musical).
The cast of The Notebook includes Tony Award winner Maryann Plunkett as Older Allie, Dorian Harewood as Older Noah, Joy Woods as Middle Allie, Ryan Vasquez as Middle Noah, Jordan Tyson as Young Allie, John Cardoza as Young Noah, Andrรฉa Burns as Mother/Nurse Lori, Carson Stewart as Johnny/Fin.
