Bengaluru Doctor Addressesโฃ Milk Misconceptions, Highlights Nutritional Differences Between Cow’s and Plant-Based Options
Bengaluru, India – August 21, 2024 – A leading โbengaluru endocrinologist is clarifying commonโ questions surrounding milk consumption, addressing concerns about its nutritional value and suitability โfor different diets.โ Dr. โขSuma Uday, senior consultant inโ paediatric endocrinology and metabolic bone disease at Narayana Health, Bengaluru, and practicing โฃphysician at Birmingham โChildren’s Hospital, UK, emphasized โthe importance of milk as a calcium source for strongโ bones, while debunking myths about its vitaminโ D content.
Speaking to HT Lifestyle, โDr. Uday stated, “Milkโ should be part of the โdiet as milk โhas calcium, which is required for strong bones.” However, sheโค cautioned, “People often think milk has vitamin D, but this is not true.Unless milk is fortifiedโข with vitamin D,there is very little to noโข vitamin D โคin milk,” โsuggesting โmilk alone isn’t โa โcomplete โฃnutritional solution.
Theโค doctor reassured that cow’sโ milk posesโ no inherent health risks โunless an individual has โฃa diagnosed โขmilk allergy, in which case avoidance based on medical advice โคis โrecommended.
Regardingโ the growing popularity of vegan milk alternatives, Dr. Uday โfound “no medical indication to add a vegan alternative milk into the diet unless it is for personal preference.” This aligns with a recent study published in Januaryโ 2024 in the Journal of Food โฃresearch International, which found plant-based milks โฃmay not offer the same nutritional profile as cow’s milk.
Professor Marianne Nissen Lund, lead author of the study, commented,โค “We definitely need to consume more plant-based foods. But if you’re looking for properโข nutrition and believe that plant-based drinks can replace cow’s milk, you’d be mistaken.”
Dr.Uday furtherโค explained that the nutritional content of plant-based milks varies substantially depending on their source.โ “The nutrient in vegan milk depends on the base source of the milk.As an example, soya milk will have more protein than oat or rice-based milk.”
