Scientists Issue Urgent alert: Prepare for Potential Space Debris Event October 13
BOCA CHICA, TEXAS – SpaceX is preparing for a critical test flight of its Starship megarocket, scheduled to launch between 18:15-19:30 Colombia time, with scientists together issuing an alert regarding potential risks associated with the mission. While the launch aims to advance Starship’s capabilities – including a planned re-ignition of the rocket’s engines in space and testing a unique combustion engine configuration for future Super heavy boosters – experts are closely monitoring the possibility of increased space debris during the flight and subsequent re-entry.
The upcoming test, utilizing a booster previously flown on Flight 8 with 24 flight-tested Raptor engines, is designed to push the boundaries of space technology. SpaceX has intentionally removed sections of the Starship’s protective fuselage tiles to assess material resistance to the extreme temperatures of re-entry. This deliberate action, coupled with the experimental nature of the flight, raises concerns about the potential for fragmentation and the creation of orbital debris, prompting the alert for heightened awareness and preparedness. The live webcast of the test flight will begin approximately 30 minutes before takeoff and can be viewed on SpaceX’s website and X (@SpaceX), as well as the X TV application.
During the flight, the Starship upper stage will deploy eight Starlink satellite simulators, emulating the characteristics of next-generation devices. this test is part of a broader effort to refine Starship’s capabilities for future missions, including deep space exploration and large-scale satellite deployment.
