Chinaโฃ Eastern Airlines โto Resume Shanghai–Delhi Flights After Five-Year Suspension
Shanghai, China – State-backed China Eastern Airlines will resumeโ flights between โShanghai and Delhi on November 9, marking a meaningful step in the โrestoration โof direct air links between China and India after a five-year freeze. โขThe airline’s website confirmed the resumption, coinciding with a broader diplomaticโ thaw spurred, in part, byโฃ evolving global trade dynamics.
Flights will operate three โฃtimes weekly, on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, accordingโข to the airline’s โonline ticket sales platform. China Eastern Airlines โฃhas not yet responded to requests for โฃcomment.
The resumption follows an announcement earlier this โคmonth by India’s foreign ministry confirming the โrestartโฃ of commercial flights between the two countries. This development occured after Indian Prime Minister Narendra modi’s visit โคto China in August โคfor a summit of the shanghai Cooperation Organisation -โฃ his first visit in over seven years. Discussions during the summit focused on improving trade โties, with Modi also raising concerns regarding India’s trade deficit with china.
India’s largest carrier, IndiGo, hasโ already announced plans to launch daily nonstop โflightsโ betweenโ Kolkata and Guangzhou.โ Guangzhou Baiyun international Airport indicated it would encourage furtherโค direct route โขdevelopment, โขincluding โpotential connections between Guangzhou and Delhi.
Direct flights were initially suspended duringโ the COVID-19 pandemic in โค2020 and remained grounded following deadly clashes along the Himalayan border, leading โคto aโข prolonged military standoff. โฃThe border conflictโ resultedโฃ in the deaths of four Chinese soldiers and 20 Indian soldiers – the most significant loss of life in decadesโ between the two nations.
The easing of โคtensions and resumption of flights alsoโฃ comes amid increased trade โpressure from the United States. in September, U.S.President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indianโ imports to 50 percent, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil. Reports also indicate Trump has urged the European Union โคto consider imposing 100 percent tariffsโค on both China and India.
