U2 Hints atโ New Music, Reflects on Protest Song Legacy at Woody Guthrie Prize Ceremony
TULSA, OK – U2 members Bono and The Edgeโ offeredโฃ a โขglimpse into their creative process and a โขpotential โคdirection for their next albumโฃ while accepting theโข prestigious Woody Guthrie Prize in Tulsa, Oklahoma, โon April 27,โค 2024. The band, honored for embodying Guthrie’s โขspirit of social justice through music, performed a selection of classic protest songs andโค debuted lyrics from an unfinished track inspired โby theโ life of Palestinian activist awdah โHathaleen.
The ceremony, โheld at Cain’s Ballroom -โ a venue U2 last played in 1981, โคwith subsequent visitsโข in 1983 and 2018 -โค saw the band revisit iconic tracks including “Running Toโ Stand โคStill,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” and “One,” alongsideโ a cover of Woody Guthrie’s “Jesus Christ.” They also spontaneously โขperformed a capella lines from The Beatles’ “A Hard โDay’s Night” duringโ their acceptance speech. This โevent marks the first concrete evidence of material โintended forโ a follow-upโค to theirโ 2017 album, Songs of Experience, with no โreleaseโค date currently announced.
The woody โGuthrie Prizeโ recognizes artists who champion the less luckyโ and drive positive social change โคthrough their work. Past recipients include Pete seeger,โ Mavis Staples, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen,โ and this year’s โco-honoree, Tom Morello. โฃ
Bono emphasized the enduring power of song as a catalyst for โchange,stating,”Bob Dylan really did bring us to the place โขwhere the songโ was an instrumentโฃ to โopen up worlds,” and adding,”America โฃis โthe greatest song still โฃyet to be written.” The Edge โechoed this sentiment, asserting, “Our โขfavorite protest songs always had a โคsense of vision, something to aim for. You don’t talk about the darknessโ – you make the light brighter.”
During โขa discussion with producer โคT Bone Burnett, Bono shared lyrics from the developing song about Awdahโค Hathaleen: “one father shot / three childrenโ crying / if there is no law / is thereโ no โcrime / if there โฃis no hope / what’s there โคto rhyme / history is written โฃ/ one life at a โขtime.” He also acknowledged โthe โchallenge of writing protest songs on demand,stating,”you can’t write a song to โorder.”
