chery Surges to Top 10 as โฃIndonesian Car Sales Dip in September 2025
Jakarta, Indonesia – A shiftโ in Indonesia’s automotive landscape is underway as Chineseโข automakerโ Chery experiencesโ a dramaticโข sales increase, displacing BYD from its position among the country’s best-selling car brands in September 2025. โWhile overall carโ sales โexperienced a decline,Chery’s substantial gains signal โขa growing consumer โขappetite for its vehicles and a potential realignment of market dominance.
Total car sales in Indonesiaโ fellโค in September, with wholesaleโ figures dropping from โ66,518 units to 63,723 units. Year-to-date figures through September 2025 show 561,819โ units โฃsoldโข wholesale and 585,917 units retailed. This downturn comes as Chery capitalizes on shifting consumer preferences, โposting meaningful growth while other brands, including BYD, face sales challenges. The changingโ rankings highlight the increasing competitiveness of the Indonesian automotive market and the rising influenceโ of Chinese manufacturers.
BYD โคexperienced a significant downturn, with wholesale sales plummeting 57.5 percent – a loss of 1,474 units – to 1,088 units. Retail sales also decreased by 25.9 percent, falling from 2,746 units to 2,036 units. Mitsubishi Motors also saw declines, with wholesale sales down โ10.5 โpercent andโ retail sales down 7.4 percent. In starkโ contrast, Chery recorded a 78.5 percent increase in wholesaleโค sales and โขa โค41.5 percent increase in retail sales, marking the most substantial โgains of any manufacturer during the period.
These shifts have โreshaped the rankings of Indonesia’s โคbest-selling carโ brands. BYD, previously a strong โcompetitor alongsideโ Suzuki, has fallen out โฃofโ the top 10 โขin wholesale sales and been overtaken by Cheryโ in retail sales.
