Brooklyn Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Jesús Pérez: Identity Confirmed by Authorities

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

They identify the man who died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Brooklyn.

This is Jesús Pérez, a 49-year-old Brooklyn resident.

The event occurred on Friday around 12:30 noon at the intersection of Cinco Sur and Keap streets, in the Williamsburg sector.

Police arrived at the scene alerted by a 911 call for a motor vehicle collision involving a struck-by pedestrian. There they found Pérez lying on the road with trauma to his body.

The Emergency Service took him to Woodhull Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Further investigation revealed that the man was involved in a dispute with an unknown driver of a dark-colored Honda pickup, who struck him while he was standing on Keap Street. The vehicle fled the scene and was abandoned in front of 199 Humboldt Street.

There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

MTA Studies New Designs for Turnstiles to Combat Fare Evasion

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 18, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The MTA is studying new designs for turnstiles that they hope will stop passengers who choose not to pay the fare.

The designs on display in Grand Central Terminal are too high to jump over and some models feature an alarm that goes off when two people try to pass but pay a single fare.

Officials say that last year alone, the agency saw $690 million in lost fares on subway, bus and commuter rail, as well as bridge and tunnel tolls.

The president of the MTA, Janno Lieber commented that it is a lost money that could be used to improve the service or invest in infrastructure.

But the implementation of the new turnstiles will not be seen soon.

They are demos and the MTA will be calling on manufacturers to submit their designs.

Meanwhile, the agency is testing wide-aisle doors at stations to replace the emergency exit doors that the MTA chief called, and we quote, a “fare-evasion superhighway.”

MTA Investigates Urine Detection Technology for Subway Elevators

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The MTA investigates a new technology that can detect urine in subway elevators.

Transit officials have been in contact with companies that have successfully installed elevator urine detection systems at other transit systems and airports.

The MTA wants the technology to be able to differentiate between urine and other odors like garbage, food and perfume.

And once it detects urine, it will send an alert to workers so they can clean it up.

Protesters Rally for Expansion of Fair Fares Program in Manhattan

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Demonstrators protest this Monday in Manhattan to call for an expansion of the Fair Fares program.

Also Known As Fair Faresthe program offers a 50% discount on subway and bus fares to low-income New Yorkers who are between 18 and 64 years of age.

However, only those living at or below the federal poverty line can apply for the program.

The protesters will call for the program to be expanded to people earning up to 200% of the federal poverty line and another $60 million in funding for fair rates.

This Monday’s rally is scheduled at the Fulton Center in Lower Manhattan.

“Toxic Air Concentrations in NYC Subway Could Pose Health Risks, Study Finds”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 14, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Transportation researchers at New York University believe there are “alarmingly harmful” concentrations of what could be toxic particles in the subway.

The team studied the air quality on board the train, on 9 metro lines in December 2020 – 2021.

They also studied the air quality, in more than 340 platforms, in almost 300 stations.

The conclusion was that, inside, the iron particles in the air were about 140 times higher than in the outside air.

The worst station identified was 181st Street along Line 1.

Other identified particles include silicon, copper, nickel, among others.

The results also suggested that when the train doors are opened, the air mixture between the platform and the cars sees a rapid increase in these particles inside the train cars.

The lines used in this study were trains 1, 3, 5, 6, B, C, F, M and R.

Researchers believe the particles may come from friction when trains hit their brakes, as well as from transit construction work.

In response, MTA director of communication Tim Minton says, and we quote:

“We have carried out previous air quality tests on subway trains that operate throughout the underground system and found no health risks. The safety of users and employees is always our top priority.”

Health Officials Protest Dangerous Levels of Lead Found in Subway Station Paint

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 2, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

During rush hour, as people approach the subway station, peeling paint from the ceiling and train tracks may be the last thing on your mind.

But a group protesting Tuesday says maybe you should.

“There are a lot of things that are wrong for the health of this community,” Councilwoman Sandy Nurse said.

Elected officials, community leaders and other advocates held a press conference outside the Knickerbocker Avenue station in Brooklyn.

They say the peeling paint contains dangerous levels of lead.

“This has to do with the fact that this poison that falls from the trains are pieces of metal that they have, because if they have lead it is already confirmed,” said Evelyn Cruz, who attended on behalf of Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez.

The group says the problem is along 2 1/2 miles of elevated rail structures in Bushwick and Williamsburg on the JM and Z lines.

Salvatore Polizzi, a business owner in the area, ordered tests of the paint that spilled onto the street.

Those lab results revealed that one of the samples had 63,000 parts per million of lead: elected officials say those results were sent to the MTA in January of last year.

Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, her representative assured, has fought in Washington to get funds to help the MTA resolve this situation.

“$729 million has come in for day-to-day operations like this. We’re just demanding they do the right thing,” Cruz said.

Lead is dangerous, particularly for children who have a higher chance of exposure.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no safe level of lead in the blood, and even low levels can cause developmental delays or damage.

Talking to train passengers here at this station, they say it’s worrying but not surprising.

“Lead has also been found in private homes. So it’s not surprising. Lead can be found anywhere,” said Mery Tolentino.

“They must do something. They should improve that, paint it. Install it again because that is very harmful to health,” said Gloria Cordero.

Several labor unions joined the conference and say they are ready to complete the job and now need the MTA to move forward with the project.
