Summer Streets: Enjoying Car-Free Streets for Recreation and Fun

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 6, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

It is the opportunity to enjoy some streets, normally used by cars, to walk, jog, ride a bicycle and play on them.

Summer Streets, organized by the Mayor’s Office and its Transportation Department, held its second day, this time in Manhattan, with various activities for everyone.

“Dedicated miles, cultural, educational diversity, opportunities for cyclists to ride their bikes. CITI Bike free, it was Saturday, it is today and it would also be the other three Saturdays we have left. Today is Manhattan, and we come to tell the residents of Manhattan, of New York, the visitors that what Summer Streets used to be from the Brooklyn Bridge to 79, today we reached the heart of Harlem at 125 a.m. Clayton Powell Jr.,” says Ydanis Rodríguez, the city’s Transportation Commissioner.

Summer Streets Saturdays run through August 26 and are from 7am to 1pm.

This initiative was created since 2008, this time around 20 miles free of cars.

Another novelty is that the program is present in the 5 boroughs of New York, the first weekend began in Staten Island and Queens, this and the following two weekends are here in Manhattan and the last two Saturdays of Summer Streets will be in Brooklyn and the Bronx, respectively.

All activities are free and include sports such as volleyball, contests, water and food stations, among others.

Arismeidy Ureña Díaz, volleyball player indicates:

“It means a lot because we come here to have fun between teams.”

Yvonne Ortega adds:

“When you come to New York, it’s on the run. There are many people walking, watching the traffic, and sometimes you want to stop to take a picture, you can’t, the cars are waiting, you have to cross. This is the opportunity to take the time to see what is around you that no one normally takes.”

“One now, when you reach this age that you are using medicines and going to the doctor and all that and the first thing the doctor tells you is that you do walk or exercise and when I go for a walk or ride a bike I stay in shape” adds Ortega.

The program has been so well received that there are those who want to see it in their own neighborhood:

“We truly know that this New York community needs this type of recreation, which is Summer Streets. You have to take it to Washington Heights too!” exclaims Ramón Rodríguez, a resident of the area.

New Elevator at Dyckman Street 1 Subway Station Provides Accessibility for Disabled Riders

New Elevator at Dyckman Street 1 Subway Station Provides Accessibility for Disabled Riders

I was surprised when I saw that the elevator said open to the public…

Eliza Sánchez uses a cane and says she is happy that her Dyckman Street 1 subway station finally has an elevator that takes her to her appointments.

Eliza Sanchez, subway user:

“But what a blessing because all those stairs are not easy for me, I would have climbed sweaty and scared because one can also have an accident”

This elevator serves users on the north side of the platform, that is, towards uptown, since it already had one on the opposite side.

Francia López metro user:

“It has been very useful for me that they have also made the elevator on this side, because many times we have to carry carts and the stairs are very uncomfortable.”

We were able to capture many users going up or down the more than 32 steps because they were not aware of the new elevator or perhaps because the sign was in English.

“I am happy that there is finally an elevator, it will be a benefit for the community, but those with wheelchairs and canes cannot easily climb the stairs”, explains Carmen Flores.

The project is the result of an agreement reached with the MTA and disabled transit activists in June, agreeing to make 95% of non-compliant stations accessible by 2025.

Councilor Carmen de la Rosa explains:

“We understand that for our community to be able to take advantage of all the train lines, because we are rich in terms of transportation infrastructure, everyone has to have equal access”

The elevator has the possibility of communicating with the operators in case of emergency through voice or visually through a screen, which improves communication for users with hearing disabilities.

The project is funded through the 2020-2024 Capital Program, which allocates $5.2 billion to make a total of 67 stations accessible.

Following the opening of this elevator here at Dyckman, there are 31 accessible station projects under construction, with nine of them expected to be complete by the end of this year in Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn according to the MTA.

Activation of Lane Control Cameras on Q58 Bus Aims to Improve Service and Increase Safety for Passengers

Activation of Lane Control Cameras on Q58 Bus Aims to Improve Service and Increase Safety for Passengers

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Hilda Collado has been a passenger on the Q58 bus in Corona, Queens for years.

The announcement that they will activate lane control cameras on these buses to improve service and reduce accidents gives him a lot of peace of mind.

“It’s good because there is more security like this for the bus,” said Collado.

Collado is one of the thousands of New Yorkers who wait for the bus daily, which is often delayed because other vehicles use the bus lane.

“Perhaps when they do it like this it will be better, it will take less time,” added Collado.

According to MTA data, through May of this year, the average speed on the Q58 is 7.6 mph, 10 percent slower than the average Queens local route.

With the implementation of the camera system, the MTA seeks to increase the speed of this service by five percent.

The ABLE camera system captures drivers violating bus lane rules in real time. They collect license plate numbers, photos and videos, along with location and timestamp information.

“You asked for more laser buses. We are delivering ⚡️

“The bus lane control cameras have reached Q58 🚌.

“Last year, Q58 was the second-busiest route in our system, carrying more than 6.7 million riders. Cleared bus lanes mean faster travel for more than 28,700 customers daily,” the MTA wrote in a message on social networks.

Drivers who are caught violating bus lane rules will receive an initial fine of $50 and if they are repeat offenders, the fine could go up to $250.

Some drivers say that due to the number of vehicles on the streets, sometimes the bus line is the only one available and they hope that the authorities will be fair in reviewing the videos before issuing a ticket.

“Because what is the use of giving a person a ticket when the person is forced to pass because there is a truck doing a delivery, or two or three tractor trailers,” said José Riverón.

MTA Faces Lawsuit and Pushback Over Decision to Remove Elevator Operators

MTA Faces Lawsuit and Pushback Over Decision to Remove Elevator Operators

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com July 14, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The deadline is shortened for Lucrecia Irizarry, who has spent 15 years of her life working for the MTA, to stop operating an elevator at the 191st Street 1 train station in Washington Heights.

“It is a frustrating situation, really. You feel like you gave everything of yourself, and then you get sick and it’s as if you no longer serve him,” said Irizarry.

And it is that the Metropolitan Transport System as of this Sundayi plans to leave more than 30 employees without work who perform this function in four stations of the A and 1 train lines.

“In all stations people feel afraid, because they are people who have a phobia of confinement. It is not simply the fact that we are in an elevator, but the safety of the people, that they feel safe,” added Irizarry.

The employees, for their part, filed a lawsuit pointing out that the elevators are the only way to access those platforms and that they provide security within some of the deepest stations in the system.

“We are fighting for elevator jobs for our people with disabilities. The positions that have been assigned are the ones that don’t fit the majority, and they’ve been here through tough times for the MTA, like the pandemic,” said Robert Kelley, vice president of TWU Local 100 Stations Department.

The Transportation agency plans to move operators like Irizarry into cleaning roles.

“We had to clearly accept this, the option that they imposed, because we cannot afford it, because our family depends on us,” said Irizarry.

But the employees, like the union, argue that what the MTA offers them will still put them out of a job.

“Maybe I’m going to try my best, but there are people who don’t go, even if they try. They will not be able to carry out the work, and we do not want to see ourselves as if we do not want to, if it is not that physical capacity will not allow us,” said Irizarry.

Elected officials, including Assemblyman Manny De los Santos, joined the lawsuit.

“Demanding that the MTA reconsider its decision. It is an attitude, I would say very disrespectful, not worth taking, and we are with the transit workers, and we understand that it is more than important, essential that they return to their jobs that they originally had,” De los Santos said.

The legal dispute asks a judge to stay the firing of the workers until public hearings are held and adequate accommodations are provided for them.

While an MTA spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the lawsuit.
