LTA Unveils New Device to Detect Speed-Boosting Modifications to E-Bikes,PMDs
Singapore – The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is stepping up enforcementโ against illegally modified โactive mobility devices with theโข deployment ofโข a new โคspeed measurement gadget. Developed in partnership with Temasek Polytechnic, โคthe device can identify e-bikes and Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) exceeding the legal speed limits of 25 km/h, andโ also Personal Mobility โฃAids โ(PMAs) exceeding 10 km/h.
Last month,โ LTA impounded 91 โฃillegally modified devices, with 18 detections made using theโฃ new technology. This comes as the authority recorded 246 activeโค mobility offences in โขNovember, including the possession and use of non-compliant devices. LTA shared details of the new gadget in a Facebookโค postโ on Thursday (Dec 4).
Theโค increased enforcement followsโ a concerning trend in off-roadโ accidents involving active mobility devices. In the first half of 2025, thereโฃ were 44 โขsuch accidents, compared to 104 for theโฃ entirety of 2024, according to LTA โคdata provided to โคAsiaOne.
Under the Activeโค Mobility Act, individuals โฃfound modifying โtheir own โor another โperson’sโ active mobility device face a fineโ of up to $20,000 and/or imprisonment for up to two years. repeat โขoffenders could โbe fined up to $40,000 and/or jailed for up to four years.
