a16z Partner’s 9 Flights to Stockholm Signal US VC Hunt for Swedish Unicorns

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has invested $2.3 million in Dentio, a Swedish startup leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline administrative tasks for dental practices, signaling a broader trend of U.S. Venture capital firms actively seeking opportunities in Europe. The pre-seed funding round, announced this week, represents a relatively tiny investment for a16z, which recently unveiled latest funds totaling $15 billion, but underscores the firm’s commitment to identifying promising companies outside of the U.S. Even without establishing local offices.

The investment was spurred, in part, by extensive travel by a16z partner Gabriel Vasquez, who reportedly made nine trips from New York City to Stockholm in the past year. Vasquez’s visits extended beyond Dentio, encompassing companies like Lovable, and were driven by a desire to identify potential “Swedish unicorns” before they expand operations to the United States. “We spend a lot of time developing a deep understanding of specific markets and knowing where innovation is emerging,” Vasquez told TechCrunch. “In Sweden, that has meant closely tracking ecosystems like [SSE Business Lab] — the startup incubator of the Stockholm School of Economics — and the companies coming out of it.”

Dentio’s origins lie within the SSE Business Lab, a startup incubator that has also fostered successful Swedish companies such as Klarna, Legora, and Voi. The startup was founded by Elias Afrasiabi, Anton Li, and Lukas Sjögren, former high school classmates who reconnected as students at the Stockholm School of Economics and the Royal Institute of Technology. The impetus for Dentio stemmed from a personal observation: Li’s mother, a dentist, expressed frustration with the administrative burden that diverted time and attention from patient care.

The founders initially focused on developing an AI-powered recording tool capable of generating clinical notes. However, Afrasiabi acknowledged the potential for such tools to become commoditized, emphasizing the need for Dentio to demonstrate sustained value to dental practices to avoid losing market share to competitors. “It’s only a matter of time before AI scribes become a commodity product, and Dentio needs to prove its value to dentists so they aren’t tempted to switch providers when that happens,” he said.

Dentio faces competition from other Swedish AI-focused startups, including Tandem Health, which secured a $50 million Series A round last year to support clinicians across various medical specialties. While Tandem Health has a broader focus, Dentio differentiates itself by concentrating exclusively on the dental market, believing this specialization will enable it to achieve the scale expected by venture capital investors through international expansion. “Now we’re a team of seven people, and we think that it’s possible to build a unified way of handling administration all over Europe, and maybe even all over the world,” Afrasiabi stated.

Dentio’s branding prominently highlights its “Made in Sweden” origins, emphasizing that all relevant data is processed within Sweden and Finland in compliance with Swedish and EU data protection laws. This messaging is intended to appeal to privacy-conscious European customers and also signals a potential advantage to investors, referencing Sweden’s track record of producing successful global companies.

The founders reported that they did not actively seek investment, relying instead on word-of-mouth referrals to attract a16z’s attention. “We went to zero meetups. I reached out to zero investors,” Afrasiabi said. “I think it was mostly through referrals and people talking to each other that the news got all the way over to the U.S.”

Vasquez attributed a16z’s success in identifying early-stage companies to a proactive approach of cultivating relationships with local founders and leveraging their expertise as scouts. “In Sweden for example, we partnered with top founders abroad like Fredrik Hjelm, founder of Voi, and Johannes Schildt, founder of Kry, by turning them into scouts and mapping the best local talent,” he said. Vasquez views Sweden as part of a broader global pattern of innovation, citing examples such as Black Forest Labs in Germany and Manus, a Singapore-based AI startup acquired by Meta.

Vasquez, who focuses on AI application investments for a16z, is also actively exploring opportunities in Latin America, particularly Brazil. He recently shared his enthusiasm for the region’s burgeoning AI scene on LinkedIn, stating, “I believe AI is the great equalizer,” and adding, “Most people now have access to PhD-level intelligence on a phone, and Silicon Valley is a state of mind.”
