3I/ATLAS: UN Reveals It’s Part of Global Planetary Defence Exercise

3I/ATLAS Update: UN โคConfirmsโฃ Comet Is Subject Of Formal Planetary-Defenseโ€‹ Exercise

The United Nations, through the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), has formally confirmed that the interstellar comet โ€3I/ATLAS (C/2025 N1) will be โฃthe focus of a meaningful planetary-defence exercise. The campaign, designed to refine โฃastrometricโข measurement techniques, will run โฃfrom โ€‹November 27,โข 2025,โ€Œ through January โ€Œ27, 2026.

While 3I/ATLAS currently poses no threat to Earth – its closestโ€Œ approach on Decemberโ€‹ 19, 2025, will be approximately 270 million kilometers – itsโค unique characteristics make it an ideal test case.The exercise aims to improve the accuracy of predicting the trajectories ofโข comets, which presentโฃ distinct challenges compared to asteroids.

According to โ€‹a Minor Planet Electronic Circular (M.P.E.C.2025-U142) issued by theโ€Œ International astronomical UnionS Minor โ€Planet Center,comets are “extended bodies featuring โ€comae and tails” that can โฃ”systematically pull centroid measurements off their central brightnessโ€ peak,makingโ€Œ trajectory estimation more complex.” This means determining โ€Œa comet’s precise position is more difficult than with a point-like asteroid.

The campaign’s core objective is to introduce and refine “methods for improving astrometry from cometโค observations.” โ€This practise is considered crucial for โ€ensuring the global astronomical community can rapidly and โฃaccurately assess the trajectory โ€Œand potential impact probability of any future, possibly hazardous โ€Near-earth Object.

The IAWN announced โขthe observing window will span two months, allowing โ€Œfor a comprehensive exercise of international capabilities. A preparatory workshop wasโ€Œ held to align participants on objectives and methodologies.

This exercise โ€Œis โขa demonstration of global preparedness, stress-testing the systems designedโฃ to protectโ€Œ Earth from potential future threats.โ€ The work also strengthens collaboration between space agencies (through โ€the Space Mission Planning โคAdvisory Group – SMPAG) and the diplomatic โฃarm of the United Nations (theโข United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs -โ€‹ UNOOSA), highlighting planetary defenceโ€‹ asโฃ aโค continuous andโ€‹ coordinated international effort.

NASA Shares First Images of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Captured From Mars

PASADENA, CA โ€Œ- November 24, 2025 – NASA has released a series of unprecedented images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, captured by spacecraft currently orbiting and exploring Mars. The images, taken by the Mars reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), MAVEN, and Perseverance rover, offerโฃ scientists a rare possibility to study an object originating outside our solar system.

3I/ATLAS, discovered inโฃ 2023, is only โ€Œthe third confirmedโ€Œ interstellar object detected passing through our solar โ€Œsystem. Its close approach to Mars inโข late โ€ŒSeptember and early Octoberโข 2025 allowed for detailed observations unavailable fromโ€ Earth-based telescopes.

The HiRISE camera on MRO captured images showing the comet and its surrounding gas envelope, estimatedโ€‹ to be approximately 1500 kilometers in diameter, formed by gas released as the comet nears the Sun. Scientists hope further analysisโ€ of theseโ€‹ images will help determine the size of the comet’s nucleus – its icy, dusty core – andโข the composition of โ€Œits โคparticles.

“Observations of interstellar objects are still rare enough that we learn something new every time,” said shane Byrne, hirise principal investigator at theโค University of Arizona.”We are lucky 3I/ATLAS passes โ€ŒMars thisโ€‹ close.”

MRO’s project โ€Œscientist, Leslie Tamppari of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, added, “One of MRO’s biggest contributions to โ€‹NASA’s work on Mars is observing surface phenomena that only HiRISE can see.this is one of the opportunities where we can also study โคpassing space objects.”

Simultaneously occurring, MAVEN’s Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) observed 3I/ATLAS for ten days (September 27 to October 7)โ€ across various wavelengths. the resulting images depict the comet โขas a โ€Œbright, pixelated dot, exhibitingโค white at its center, blue โ€Œat theโ€ edges, and โ€‹dark purple in the outer coma. IUVS data also provides the most detailed information yetโฃ on the comet’s chemicalโฃ composition, including an upper limit on theโฃ hydrogen to โฃdeuterium ratio,โข offering clues โขto its origin.

perseverance rover, operating within Jezero Crater, also successfully captured images of 3I/ATLAS on October 4 using its Mastcam-Z camera, โขrequiring a long exposure time due to the object’sโ€Œ faintness.

Currently, 3I/ATLAS is exhibiting newโฃ behavior, including increased brightness, newโค ultraviolet and X-ray activity, and more vibrant colors as it emerges from behind the Sun.

The comet will reach its closest point to Earth on December 19, 2025, at a distance of almost twice โขthe earth-Sun distance (2 AU), posing noโ€‹ threat toโข our planet.

NASA Captures Unprecedented Views of Interstellar Comet โ€3I/ATLAS with Multi-Probe Observations

WASHINGTON – NASA and international โฃpartnersโค have released โคa series of new images and data of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, capturedโข by a diverse fleet of spacecraft ranging from Mars rovers to โคsolar observatoriesโ€ and probes en route to Jupiter. The observations offer a โขunique โ€opportunity to study a visitor from beyond our solar system,providingโฃ clues about the formation and composition of planetary โขsystems around othre stars.

Whileโ€Œ the Mars rover Perseverance spotted 3I/ATLAS as a faint,elongated spot of light,other missions secured more detailed views. Solar observatories STEREO and SOHO, positioned approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earthโ€‹ at Lagrange point 1, tracked theโ€Œ cometโค as it passed โ€behind the Sun – a first โขfor theseโฃ missions, which have historically focused on solar activity.โ€ NASA explains this marksโข the first time these solar probes have specifically targeted an extrasolar object.

The NASA probe Lucy, currentlyโ€‹ traveling to the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter, capturedโค images showcasing the cometS tail. Meanwhile, the Psyche asteroid probe obtained images from around โ€Œ50 million kilometers away, aiding โฃin refining the comet’s trajectory. โฃ

Currently, the ESA’s JUICE spacecraft is ideally โ€‹positioned to conduct aโค closer examinationโ€Œ of 3I/ATLAS, passing within approximatelyโฃ 60 million โ€Œkilometers.The JUICE team activated onboardโ€Œ instruments to analyze particles released by the comet, potentially revealing insights into its origins.โ€Œ

These combined observations represent a important step forward in understandingโ€Œ interstellar โขobjectsโ€ and the materials theyโ€ carry from distantโ€ star systems.

This acceleration requires an implausible amount โขof mass loss toโฃ account for using conventional models.Data indicates theโค comet is ejecting massive jets of material, โ€aโ€Œ million times more powerful than the solar wind, in both directions – toward โขand away from the Sun.

further analysis reveals an atypical chemical composition, with unusually high levels ofโ€ carbon dioxide and nickel, suggesting formation in a โฃvastly different chemical โฃhabitat. Scientists estimate the โขcomet’s age โคto be up to 7 billion years or more, predating our Solar โขSystem.

China’s Tianwen-1 โ€‹Mars probe has captured โ€images of โคthe interstellar comet โ€Œ3I/ATLAS, adding to โ€Œa small but โคgrowing collection of observations of the rare visitorโ€ from beyond our solar system.
