Israel Receives Soldier’s Remains After 11 Years in Gaza

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 9, 2025

Israel Confirms Receipt of Remains of ⁣Soldier Killed in 2014 Gaza Conflict

KHAN YOUNIS,⁢ Gaza – Israel has confirmed receiving the remains of Hadar⁢ Goldin, an Israeli soldier killed during ⁤the 2014 Gaza war, after they were recovered and returned ⁤by ⁤authorities in Gaza. The⁢ remains of approximately 300 individuals have been returned ‍in‌ total, with 89 identified as of saturday, according to reports from Gaza City.

The return of Goldin’s remains⁢ closes a deeply painful chapter for his family and for Israel, ⁤which has long sought the return ‌of its soldiers and citizens‌ missing or killed in conflict. The recovery comes amid the ongoing war that began with a Hamas-led attack on southern israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths,⁤ mostly civilians, and the abduction of‍ 251‌ people. The ⁤return also ⁣occurs as the conflict has led to a staggering 69,176 ⁢Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry,‍ which is staffed ‌by medical professionals and maintains ⁤records considered generally reliable ⁢by independent experts.

for⁣ nearly a ⁢decade, the Goldin family ‌endured the anguish of ⁢uncertainty, holding a “pseudo-funeral” at the urging of Israeli ‍military rabbis, according ⁤to Leah Goldin, Hadar’s mother. She described the lingering uncertainty as a ⁢”knife constantly making new cuts.”

“Returning⁢ her son’s⁣ body has ethical and religious ⁤value and is part of the‍ sacrosanct pact Israel ⁤makes with its citizens, who are required by ⁢law to⁢ serve in the military,” Leah ‌Goldin told The Associated Press earlier this year. “Hadar is a soldier who went to ‍combat and they abandoned him, and they destroyed⁢ his humanitarian rights⁤ and ours as well.”

Following the October 7th attack, the Goldin family⁣ shifted their focus to supporting the families of those newly abducted, initially facing a sense⁢ of isolation. “We were a symbol of failure,” Goldin recalled. “They told us,’we aren’t like you,our kids will come ⁣back ⁤soon.'”

Gaza War: Death Toll Surpasses 69,000 as Hostage Exchanges Continue

Gaza Death Toll⁤ Exceeds 69,000 as Exchanges Continue

GAZA CITY, [Date of Publication – inferred from context as Saturday, November 23, 2023] – The death toll⁤ in ⁣Gaza has surpassed 69,000,⁤ according ‍to Palestinian ⁣health officials, as fighting between ⁢Israeli forces and ⁤militants persists. The escalating conflict has seen renewed exchanges, including the return of remains by both sides,⁤ signaling ongoing clashes despite international calls for ⁤a ⁤ceasefire.

In the West Bank, escalating settler violence has⁢ resulted in ⁢multiple injuries.⁣ Palestinian ⁢health officials ⁤reported 11 people were injured in an attack by Israeli settlers in the town of Beita, including ⁣journalists, medics, international activists, and farmers assisting ‍with ⁤the olive ‌harvest.‍

Jonathan Pollak, ⁣an activist present during the ⁤beita attack, recounted to The Associated Press that dozens of masked settlers ‍armed with clubs descended upon olive pickers,⁢ throwing rocks and chasing people. He sustained a head injury and ‌required hospitalization,‌ and witnessed settlers⁣ attacking a journalist and her security guard.

Reuters reported two‌ of its journalists ⁢were attacked “by a group of men‌ with sticks and rocks” despite identifying themselves as press, and‍ both were injured.⁤ A spokesperson for Reuters called for israeli⁢ authorities to investigate⁢ and hold those responsible accountable.

The Israeli military ⁢stated it dispersed⁢ a confrontation “between Israeli civilians and Palestinians during an uncoordinated ⁤olive⁢ harvest in⁤ an‌ area that ‍requires prior⁤ coordination” and that several Palestinians were injured.

Further violence was reported in the‍ nearby village of Burin, where the Palestinian red Crescent said settlers injured four international activists⁤ and one 57-year-old man. Israeli military officials reported responding to rock-throwing at an ⁣Israeli vehicle,‍ followed by Israeli civilians throwing rocks at harvesters, resulting in injuries to both Israeli and Palestinian civilians.

Rights groups note that ‍arrests and prosecutions for settler violence ⁢are infrequent. Haaretz newspaper reported ⁤in ‍2022 that charges ‍were pressed ‍in only 3.8% of‌ settler violence cases,⁤ with ‍the majority closed without action.

The ‌U.N. humanitarian office ⁤reported over 260 Israeli settler⁢ attacks on Palestinians ⁢and⁣ their property in the West ⁣Bank in October alone – the highest number recorded since the office ⁣began tracking in 2006.

Iraq Election: PM’s Term, Israel-Iran Tensions, and Political Divisions

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 8, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

BAGHDAD – Iraqis are heading to the polls Saturday in a parliamentary election that will test the fragile stability ‍achieved under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and ‌shape the country’s⁣ future trajectory amid ongoing ‌regional⁢ tensions and internal divisions. The ⁤election comes as al-Sudani seeks a ⁢second term, navigating a complex political landscape and balancing relationships with both Iran and the United states.

The ⁢vote ⁢is taking place against a backdrop‌ of widespread public discontent over corruption and economic hardship. Allegations ⁣of vote-buying have surfaced, ‌leading election officials to disqualify 848 candidates-sometimes for reasons cited as allegedly insulting ⁤religious rituals or members of the armed forces.

While overall violence has decreased since the tumultuous years following the 2003 invasion, security remains a concern. Safaa al-Mashhadani, a ⁤Sunni candidate and Baghdad Provincial Council member, was assassinated by a‍ car bomb on Oct. ⁣15 in the al-tarmiya district ⁢north of the capital; five suspects ⁢have been arrested. Past elections have ‌been marred by political violence, including assassinations and attacks on polling stations.

Groups that emerged from the anti-government protests of‍ October 2019 are participating, but are hampered by internal divisions, ⁣lack of funding, and‌ limited political support.

Al-Sudani, who⁢ came to power ⁣in⁣ 2022 ⁤with the support of pro-Iran parties, has attempted to⁢ position himself as a pragmatist focused on improving public services.however, he faces challenges from within the Shiite coordination Framework bloc that initially brought him to power, specifically over control of state institutions. Simultaneously, the‍ U.S. is increasing⁣ pressure ⁢on‍ him to rein in Iraq’s powerful militias.

A⁣ key point ⁣of contention is the Popular Mobilization Forces ‌(PMF), a coalition of⁣ militias formed to combat the Islamic State group.Tho formally integrated into the Iraqi⁢ military in 2016,‍ the PMF continues to operate with significant autonomy. Members of the PMF will‍ vote alongside other security forces on Saturday.

Historically, Iraq’s election results have not always translated directly ⁣into the selection of the prime minister.Since 2003, ‌only one Iraqi ⁤prime minister,‍ Nouri al-Maliki, has served more than one term. The outcome of this election will be a crucial indicator of Iraq’s political direction, but the path ⁣to forming a government remains uncertain.

Israeli Airstrikes Intensify in Lebanon Amid Hezbollah Warnings

Israeli Airstrikes Intensify in Southern Lebanon as Tensions Rise with Hezbollah

Beirut, Lebanon – Israeli jets escalated airstrikes across southern Lebanon today, targeting areas⁤ linked to ‌Hezbollah, amid ongoing cross-border fire and⁣ stalled negotiations to de-escalate tensions. The strikes represent a important⁣ increase in intensity following months of low-level exchanges that began in support of Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and escalated into full-scale conflict⁣ in September 2024.

The conflict stems from Hezbollah’s rocket ‍fire ‍into northern ⁤Israel in solidarity with Hamas and Palestinians, prompting retaliatory Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling. While a ceasefire nominally took effect last November, both sides accuse each other of ⁣violations.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has condemned Israel’s strikes and the continued occupation of five hilltop points on Lebanese territory, but has indicated a willingness to negotiate a resolution. Though, the Lebanese government, wich officially supports disarming Hezbollah, asserts that Israeli strikes have targeted civilians and infrastructure unrelated to the ⁢Iran-backed group. Israel maintains its ‌strikes target‍ Hezbollah officials and military infrastructure.

Hezbollah’s military capabilities were significantly damaged during‌ intense Israeli air campaigns in 2024,⁤ but ⁤the group’s leader, Sheikh Naim Kassem, has vowed to continue fighting regardless of limitations. ‍

According to Lebanon’s health‍ ministry, ‍over 270 people have been killed and approximately 850 wounded by Israeli ⁤military actions since the ceasefire began. The U.N. ‍human rights office has verified 107 of those fatalities as civilians or ⁢noncombatants, as of October 9, according to spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan. No Israelis have been killed by fire from Lebanon since the ceasefire, with Hezbollah claiming responsibility for only ⁢one attack since the agreement.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions Thursday targeting financial operatives facilitating the transfer of funds from Iran to Hezbollah, alleging the use of money exchange shops to launder illicit money within Lebanon’s cash-based economy.

Title: Somali Pirates Attack Tanker, Crew Safe

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 6, 2025

Somali Pirates Board Bulk Carrier, latest in⁤ Resurgent Wave of Attacks

MOGADISHU, Somalia⁤ – Armed pirates boarded a bulk carrier, the MV Merlin, ⁣off the coast of Somalia on Thursday, ‌marking the latest incident in a concerning ⁤resurgence of maritime piracy in the region. The EU Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) confirmed‌ the attack and stated ⁤it is indeed “ready to take the appropriate actions to respond effectively.”

The incident underscores a growing threat to international shipping lanes following a period of ‌relative calm. While Somali piracy had diminished due to international naval patrols and a strengthening Somali government, attacks have increased over‍ the last year, fueled by⁢ instability linked to ‌the conflict ⁣in Yemen⁣ and the ‌ongoing Israel-Hamas war. In 2024 alone, seven incidents⁢ have‌ been reported off the Somali coast, including ⁢the seizure of multiple fishing boats. ⁤The renewed activity recalls the peak of Somali piracy in 2011, ‌when 237 attacks were recorded, costing the global economy an estimated ⁣$7 billion, ⁤including ‍$160 million in ransoms.

The Thursday ⁣attack ‍followed a separate incident earlier this week⁣ involving the Cayman islands-flagged Stolt Sagaland, where⁢ armed security personnel exchanged fire with the attackers. EUNAVFOR had recently issued an alert warning shippers that a pirate group was operating in the area and assaults were‌ “almost certain”⁣ to occur.

The ⁣International Maritime Bureau⁣ reports a continuing pattern of incidents, raising concerns⁣ for the safety of crews and the potential disruption⁤ of vital trade routes. EUNAVFOR and other international naval ⁣forces are actively monitoring the ⁤situation and responding to reported attacks.

Title: Israel Returns 45 Palestinian Bodies Amidst Gaza Ceasefire

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 3, 2025

Israel Returns Bodies of 45 Palestinians Following Hamas Remains transfer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israel has handed over the bodies‍ of 45 Palestinians to authorities, following the return of the remains⁤ of two Israeli soldiers by Hamas,‌ officials confirmed ⁣Monday. ⁣The ⁣exchange marks a critically ⁢important, though ⁢somber,⁤ progress in‌ ongoing efforts ‍to resolve outstanding issues stemming⁢ from the⁤ conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The transfer of remains, facilitated by Egyptian mediation, addresses a long-standing demand from Palestinian families who have sought the return of the bodies of loved ones ‌held by Israel. For ‌years, Israel has held onto the⁣ remains of Palestinians killed during clashes or designated as militants, citing security concerns‍ and as leverage in negotiations for the ⁢release of ‌Israeli citizens held in Gaza. The return of the Israeli soldiers’ remains – initially ⁤captured during the 2014 Gaza war‌ – had been a key priority for Israel.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced‍ Monday that the increased access ⁣for aid agencies into Gaza is a positive step,⁣ stating, “We⁢ are seeing a lifting of ⁤restrictions and more agencies able to go in with ‍aid.” ⁤Britain will also⁣ provide an additional 6 million ⁢pounds ($7.9 million) in⁢ humanitarian support for Gaza, channeled through the U.N. Population Fund.

amidst the ongoing conflict, Gaza’s health Ministry ⁢announced a campaign to vaccinate approximately 40,000 Palestinian children under 3 years old against preventable diseases, including measles, polio, and meningitis,⁣ beginning next week. ⁢The initiative will prioritize children who have missed routine vaccinations or⁢ received incomplete doses due to the war, according to Dr. Nedal Ghoneim, the Health Ministry’s public ⁢health manager.

The exchange occurs against the backdrop of a⁢ devastating conflict that began with the Hamas-led ⁤attack on southern Israel two years ago, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military offensive in Gaza has,‍ according to the Gaza health Ministry, killed over 68,800 ‍Palestinians. The‌ ministry’s figures,⁢ while generally ⁣considered reliable by independent experts, do not differentiate between civilians and⁢ combatants.⁣ Israel disputes the ministry’s figures but has not provided an alternative toll, and denies accusations of genocide leveled by a U.N. commission of inquiry and others.
