Suspicious โPackage Prompts Security Alert at Dublin’s Merrion โSquare
A security operation unfolded at Merrion Square in Dublin on Tuesday following the delivery of a suspicious package to the Iona Institute, an advocacy groupโ promoting theโ Christian religion.
David โขQuinn, Chief Executive of the โฃIona Institute, reported receiving a small package in the post around lunchtime.Uponโ opening it, a white powder spilled onto his hands and desk, accompaniedโข byโข a handwritten note reading “Happy anthrax.”
Mr. Quinn stated that three other individuals were present whenโ the package was โขopened. He promptly contacted the Gardaรญ, who responded with significant concern and later alerted the Armyโฃ Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.
As a precaution,a cordon โwas established โขaround the Iona Institute building, and Merrionโ Square South was temporarily closedโข to traffic.Gardaรญ confirmed they were alerted to the suspicious โขpackage on Tuesday afternoon โขand requested the โassistance of the EODโ team.
The security operation, occurringโ near Leinster House, causedโฃ disruption to traffic in the โarea. Gardaรญ wereโ still conductingโ investigations at the premises โคas of Tuesday evening.
the incidentโ evokes memories of the 2001 anthrax attacks in โขthe United States, where spores sent through the postal systemโ to โpoliticiansโค and news organizations resulted in five fatalities. Anthrax is a โserious disease typically caused by the Bacillus anthracis โคbacteria.
