T-Mobile announced this week a new feature, T-Mobile Live Translation, that will translate phone calls in real-time for its postpaid customers, regardless of the recipient’s phone type. The service, embedded directly into the T-Mobile network, aims to provide live translation capabilities for calls in over 50 languages.
Unlike existing translation services that require specific devices, such as Google’s Pixel 10, T-Mobile’s offering is designed to operate with any phone on its network, even older models like flip phones. The company is leveraging artificial intelligence services integrated into its network infrastructure to power the translations.
Currently, T-Mobile is initiating a beta program for the service. Postpaid customers can register their interest, with invitations to participate expected to be issued this spring. Users selected for the beta will activate the translation feature during a call by dialing *87. Once activated, the service is intended to function automatically, without requiring users to manually select languages.
While T-Mobile has not officially confirmed details regarding voice replication, promotional materials suggest the service may attempt to mimic the speaker’s voice during translation, similar to features found on Pixel phones.
The service will be offered at no cost during the beta testing phase. However, industry analysts anticipate that T-Mobile will eventually introduce a subscription fee for T-Mobile Live Translation, citing the significant investment in network technology required to support the feature.
Recent T-Mobile promotions, including offers of a free Pixel 10 to some customers and discounts of up to $800 on the Pixel 10 for at-risk customers, demonstrate the company’s ongoing focus on enhancing its mobile offerings. T-Mobile recently launched a live call translation feature that works with any phone, according to reports. The company is also currently offering deals for Android users, including a free prepaid Mastercard and wireless plans starting at $25 per month.
Registration for the T-Mobile Live Translation beta program is available on the T-Mobile website.
