Sweden Announces SEK 26.6 Billion Defense Boost Amidst Heightened Security Concerns

Stockholm, Sweden – September 16, 2025 – The Swedish government today unveiled a notable increase to its defense budget, allocating an additional SEK 26.6 billion to bolster national security. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced the investment at a press conference, citing the current serious geopolitical climate as justification for the substantial increase.

The funding injection will be directed towards a range of critical areas, including equipment procurement, personnel support, and technological advancements, with the aim of creating thousands of new jobs within the defense sector.

A key component of the budget increase, totaling SEK 9.7 billion more than 2025 levels, will be dedicated to bolstering union operations. This includes funding for training, exercises, and both domestic and international deployments, including contributions to NATO initiatives.Notably, daily allowances for conscripts will rise from SEK 146 to SEK 200, while officer aspirants will see their allowance increase from SEK 175 to SEK 240 per day.

Equipment and facilities will receive a SEK 12 billion boost, with planned investments in air defense systems, rocket artillery, ammunition, and combat vehicles slated for 2026. The Swedish Navy is expected to receive new surface combat vessels, and the air Force will benefit from tactical transport aircraft with extended range.

The government also announced a SEK 100 million investment in safeguarding Swedish defense and security interests in space. While emphasizing the importance of continued investment in innovation, industry, and research, officials did not specify a concrete financial commitment for these areas during the press conference.

“it is indeed a powerful defense budget with investments that are absolutely necessary in the serious times we are in,” stated Defense Minister Pål Jonsson, speaking on behalf of the initiative presented by the party leaders of the Moderate Party, the Sweden Democrats, the Christian Democrats, and the Liberals.

The increased spending will be financed through borrowing, with an additional SEK 10 billion to be added to national debt. This move underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening Sweden’s defense capabilities in response to evolving security challenges.
