Swansea Building Society Cohesion Cup: Cricket Unites Cardiff Communities
The Swansea Building Society Cohesion Cup, formerly known as the Cardiff Community Cricket Cup, is an annual cricket tournament designed too foster unity among Cardiff’s diverse communities. Held during the summer months, the competition unfolds on the scenic pitches surrounding Sophia Gardens, with matches commencing in May.
Community Support and Collaboration
The South Wales Police Community team actively supports the matches with visits throughout the summer. Cardiff Council also provides essential support to the tournament.
The Grand Finale at Sophia Gardens
The tournament culminates in a highly anticipated T20 match at Sophia Gardens. The winning team faces a formidable lineup of ex-professional cricketers, selected guests, and members of the South Wales Police. This year, the finale is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept.17 at 4 p.m.
A Collaborative Effort
The Cohesion Cup is a joint venture led by Glamorgan Cricket, Cricket Wales, Swansea Building Society, and South Wales Police. As its inception in 2017, the initiative has aimed to break down social barriers and promote positive relationships through cricket.
The primary objective of this project is to remove perceived social barriers and foster positive relationships across communities, leveraging cricket as a catalyst for cohesion.
2025 launch Event
The 2025 launch event for the Swansea Building Society Cohesion Cup took place on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The event featured presentations from key figures, including Mark Frost, Community Manager for Glamorgan Cricket, Assistant Chief Constable Simon Belcher, and Richard Miles from Swansea Building Society. Councilor Julie Sangani also supported the event,assisting with the drawing of the groups and shirt colors.
