Frequency Festival Interrupted by Severe Storms: Stage Areas Evacuated and Acts Canceled

August 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On August 21, 2026, severe weather threats forced the evacuation of the stage area at the FM4 Frequency Festival in St. Pölten, Austria, leading to the cancellation of performances by artists including Tom Odell and Sub Focus. Festival organizers implemented preemptive safety measures as regional wind gusts were expected to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h, disrupting the second day of the music event.

Preemptive Evacuation and Safety Protocols at St. Pölten

The decision to clear the area directly in front of the stage came as meteorological alerts flagged St. Pölten as one of the unweather hotspots across Austria’s eastern region. According to festival organizer Harry Jenner, the preventive clearance was executed to ensure safety. Visitors received notifications via Facebook, instructing them to secure their tents and to maintain a safe distance from trees, large tents, and towers.

Artist Cancellations and Revised Festival Schedules

The severe weather interruption directly impacted the evening’s running order. Sets by Tom Odell and Sub Focus were called off entirely.

Despite the abrupt schedule alterations, organizers worked to stabilize the timeline once meteorological data indicated the immediate danger was passing. According to updates provided on site, operations resumed around 21:00 when officials determined the worst of the severe weather had cleared the immediate area. The revised evening lineup pressed forward with performances by Sido on the Space Stage at 21:45, followed by SSIO on the Green Stage at 22:05.

Medical Response and Operations Leading Up to the Storm

Prior to Friday evening’s storm disruption, the music festival had maintained a relatively calm operational profile. Data released by the local Red Cross branch in St. Pölten detailed the medical footprint on the grounds up to Friday morning. Sebastian Frank, managing director of the St. Pölten district office, reported to the Austria Press Agency (APA) that medical teams had treated 383 individuals on site, with 31 cases requiring transport to a hospital.

The vast majority of patient interactions involved minor injuries or circulation-related complaints. Echoing the initial stability of the event, St. Pölten City Police Commander Franz Bäuchler characterized the festival attendees up to that point as an angenehmes Publikum, minimizing panic when municipal and security forces issued the evening evacuation orders.
