Supreme Court Halts Allahabad High Court Proceedings Against Rahul Gandhi in Disproportionate Assets Case

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The Supreme Court on August 11, 2026, directed the Allahabad High Court not to proceed with a disproportionate assets case involving Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, granting significant relief as legal challenges continue to move through the judiciary. According to Live Law and The Times of India, the apex court intervened to halt the high court proceedings in a plea that had sought a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or the Enforcement Directorate.

Supreme Court Intervention and Scheduled Hearings

The bench overseeing the matter intervened to pause the high court’s handling of the case, setting the next substantive hearing for August 17, 2026, according to The Hindu. The petition before the courts challenges the viability of the disproportionate assets allegations against Gandhi and seeks an external investigative agency inquiry. Hindustan Times reported that the order offers an immediate judicial shield for Gandhi by freezing the lower appellate timeline while the Supreme Court evaluates the merits of the petition.

Rediff confirmed that the Supreme Court’s directive requires the Allahabad High Court to step back from active docket management on the matter until the apex bench resumes its review later in August.

Parallel Enforcement Actions and Institutional Context

In a separate financial dispute involving opposition funds, the Supreme Court on August 11, 2026, declined to intervene on behalf of the Trinamool Congress against a Calcutta High Court order, according to The Hindu. That order restricted the party from operating three bank accounts frozen by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering investigation. Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, informed a bench headed by Justice M.M. Sundresh that the party already possessed limited access to operational funds.

The Enforcement Directorate had frozen three Trinamool Congress bank accounts allegedly containing approximately ₹440 crore on July 8, 2026, as part of an inquiry into fund transfers linked to the acquisition of an aircraft and a helicopter between April 2023 and June 2026. The Calcutta High Court previously appointed former judge Justice Subrata Talukdar as a special officer through September 30, 2026, to permit the party to meet monthly operational expenses. Justice Sundresh remarked that the high court had taken a balanced view of the matter, leaving operational discretion to the appointed special officer.
