UAE Economy Faces Collapse Risks Amid Regional Conflict and Recovery Efforts
Tourism and hospitality have borne the brunt of the conflict. Following the launch of military strikes at the end of February by Israel, the US, and Iran, hotel occupancy in Dubai dropped sharply from 80% to roughly 10%, according to Deutsche Welle. The downturn forced some hotels to close prematurely for planned renovations, while others offered luxury staycations at a 50% discount to attract remaining local residents.
Dubai Hotel Occupancy Plummets to 10 Percent
To counter the slump, UAE authorities introduced an incentive program in July offering visitors and residents perks worth around $800, alongside a 680 million dollar relief package designed to exempt hotels, restaurants, and select private schools from municipality costs or delay licensing fees.
Foreign Workers and Expatriates Face Hardship
Foreign workers, particularly in lower-paid hospitality and tourism roles, have faced immediate hardship as employment opportunities vanished. Deutsche Welle reported that some workers resorted to going door-to-door looking for work.
At the same time, wealthier expatriates with security concerns departed the country. To encourage their return, the UAE announced a more flexible approach to tax residency rules, allowing individuals to remain out of the country for longer periods without losing their status.
Strait of Hormuz Blockage Drives Inflation
Broader economic indicators point to mounting strain. Analysts predict that foreign direct investment in Gulf states will decline and gross domestic product will fall for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Economist Intelligence Unit noted in a July 31 briefing that despite a calming of tensions, latent risks of regional conflict will sustain investor wariness. Employers have signaled plans to cut jobs rather than make new hires, while inflationary pressures—driven partly by the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz—have pushed up the cost of raw materials and imported goods. Real estate prices in the UAE have also declined.
