Sunderland's Wilson Isidor (right) and Juan Angulo react after their team concede a goal against Brighton at the Stadium

Sunderland Drop to Bottom of Premier League Following Defeat

November 4, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Sunderland sits bottom of the Premier League

I don’t know exactly what the problem is, said Granit Xhaka, after Sunderland fell to the bottom of the Premier League table following a defeat at newly promoted Coventry.

It was reported that the club spent £161m on 15 new players after winning promotion in the summer of 2025, but invested just £60m on five players this time round. Fans welcomed the retention of captain Xhaka and forward Brian Brobbey, who scored seven league goals last season and three for the Netherlands at the World Cup. Brobbey signed a new contract until 2031 but has not scored since returning from a hamstring injury. Xhaka expressed frustration after the latest loss, questioning team concentration and attitude.

Former teammate warns team struggles reflect declining defensive form

Carl Jenkinson, a former Arsenal full-back who played 41 Premier League matches between 2011 and 2019, told BBC Sport that Xhaka’s remarks were concerning, noting that his former teammate seemed deflated.

BBC Sport added further context regarding the team’s on-field struggles through analysis from Laurens, who noted that the form of Xhaka and defender Nordi Mukiele had dipped significantly below the levels that helped Sunderland secure 11 clean sheets last term. Laurens pointed out that the manager is usually the first to pay the price for poor form.

Opta data shows Sunderland leads the Premier League with five errors leading to goals this season. Alderete and Danso share that unwanted distinction alongside Hull’s Konstantinos Tzolakis. Sunderland has conceded 14 goals—more than double their defensive tally after seven games last season—while scoring just six. Their three attempted shots against Bournemouth, all off target, marked the lowest total for any team in a single Premier League match this season.
