Documentary Films Supported by the Sundance Institute Garner Nominations for IDA Awards
Los Angeles, CA – Several documentary films nurtured through the Sundance Institute’s programs have received nominations for the 2024 International Documentary Association (IDA) Documentary Awards, signaling continued recognition for independent storytelling. The nominations highlight a diverse range of subjects, from music history to social justice issues, underscoring the power of documentary film to illuminate critical narratives.
The IDA Awards, considered among the highest honors in the documentary field, celebrate excellence in filmmaking, storytelling, and impact. This year’s nominations for Sundance-supported projects demonstrate the Institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering groundbreaking documentary work. The awards themselves are pivotal for filmmakers, offering increased visibility, industry connections, and potential funding opportunities.
Among the nominated films is Apocalypse in the Tropics, which received recognition in both Best Writing and Best Production categories.Seeds also earned a nomination for Best Production. Selena y Los Dinos, a deeply personal portrait of the Tejano music icon and her band, has already garnered accolades, including the U.S. Documentary Special Jury award for Archival Storytelling at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and is now in contention for an IDA Award.
Further bolstering the Sundance Institute’s impact, Free Leonard Peltier is nominated for Best Original Music Score, while Move Ya Body: The Birth of House and One to One: John & Yoko are both vying for the Best Music Documentary award. My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow received a nomination for Best Editing. The Alabama Solution and SALLY where also nominated for Best Production and Best Writing, respectively.
