Sugar Stocks Rally as Domestic Prices Surge Amid Global Supply Crunch

August 24, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Shares of Indian sugar companies, including Balrampur Chini Mills, Dhampur Sugar, and Uttam Sugar, rallied up to 11% in Monday trading sessions. Domestic sugar prices climbed above Rs 50 per kg amid tight inventories, surging festive demand, and global supply concerns driven by adverse weather and Brazil’s ethanol shift.

According to market data cited by regional financial coverage, Balrampur Chini Mills gained over 3% to reach Rs 752 on the BSE. Meanwhile, Dhampur Sugar gained 8% to hit Rs 200 per share, and Uttam Sugar surged 11% to trade at Rs 359 per share. Additional movers included Triveni Engineering, which rose 4% to Rs 306, and EID Parry, which gained over 4% to touch Rs 831 per share. These equity movements reflect a broader revaluation of milling margins as ex-mill prices jumped about 20%, adding about Rs 10 per kg over the past four to five days.

The immediate catalyst for the price surge stems from a combination of domestic stockpiling limits and an aggressive demand cycle. India’s domestic sugar consumption traditionally spikes between August and November due to major festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Dussehra, and Diwali. This calendar convergence fuels heavy commercial demand from confectioners and biscuit manufacturers. Yet, physical availability remains constrained. Last month, government directives ordered dealers to restrict their inventory holding periods to a maximum of 30 days. As prices continued their upward trajectory toward record highs, authorities further halved the stockholding limit for bulk sugar consumers to just 15 days.

Supply chain constraints extend far beyond domestic borders, creating complex operational hurdles for industrial buyers. In Brazil, the world’s largest sugar producer, adverse weather has triggered harvest delays. Compounding the shortage, Brazilian mills diverted 58% of cane juice toward ethanol production in June, capitalizing on more lucrative fuel margins. Brazil also raised its mandatory ethanol blending target to 32% in July, up from 30% in June and significantly higher than the 25-27% mix recorded earlier in the year. Compounding these pressures, international forecasts project widening global deficits. Green Pool estimates a worldwide sugar deficit of 3.3 million tonnes, while StoneX pegs the shortfall at 1.7 million tonnes, and the International Sugar Organisation projects a deficit of 0.26 million tonnes.

Execution risks remain elevated as physical verification teams inspect mill volumes across key agricultural belts to enforce hoarding curbs. Industry executives note that policymakers are actively assessing whether import interventions will be required to stabilize domestic availability before the peak festive season concludes.
