‘Stronger Than the Devil’: A Black Comedy Lost in Time – Film Review
The French dark comedy “Plus Forts Que Le Diable” (“Stronger Than the Devil”) is set to premiere in cinemas on March 25, 2026, according to Maverick Films.
Directed by Graham Guit, the film stars Melvil Poupaud, Asia Argento, Marine Vacth, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Raïka Hazanavicius, and Julie Chen. The story centers on Valentin, a man described as lost and broke, who unexpectedly reconnects with his son, Joseph, after two decades of separation. This reunion plunges Valentin, along with Joseph’s wife, Alice, into chaos.
The film marks Guit’s return to directing after a 18-year hiatus, following his 1998 film “Les Kidnappeurs,” which also featured Poupaud. According to Sud Ouest, Guit’s new work draws inspiration from filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. The plot involves a series of escalating events, with characters JP, Mila, and Gigi also playing key roles.
Nouvel Obs describes the film as a story of “scamming and bloodshed” involving a group of “chic losers.” The publication notes the film’s tone is reminiscent of the 1990s film “Hibernatus” rather than Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” suggesting a sense of anachronism, and absurdity.
Rockstone Films produced “Plus Forts Que Le Diable,” with international sales handled by The Pool. The film’s running time is 1 hour and 24 minutes. Press inquiries are being handled by André-Paul Ricci at [email protected].
Early reviews, as reported by Le Monde and Première, suggest a film of “vivid intensity” and “breathless suspense,” while Trois Couleurs calls it the “most obsessive work of the year,” and Télérama describes it as a “sensitive portrait.”
