Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden to Undergo Second Mastectomy
Professional dancer Amy Dowden has revealed she will undergo a second mastectomy this week as she continues her battle wiht breast cancer. Dowden was first diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023 and underwent a lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy.
Symptoms of breast cancer often initially present as a painless lump in the breast, though many lumps are benign fluid-filled cysts. Cancer can also spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit, causing swelling or a lump.
Diagnosis typically begins with a physical examination by a doctor, possibly followed by tests like a mammography - a specialized X-ray of breast tissue. A biopsy, involving the removal and microscopic examination of tissue, is crucial to confirm or rule out cancer. Further tests, such as blood tests, liver ultrasound scans, or chest X-rays, might potentially be used to determine if the cancer has spread.
Treatment options for breast cancer include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone treatment, often used in combination.
