São Paulo biennial to Screen Films Exploring Territory,Sovereignty on November 28
São Paulo,Brazil – The 36th São Paulo Biennial will present the first bloc of its film program,Stream of Images/Imaginaries,focusing on the theme Territory and Sovereignty,on Friday,November 28,2025,at 10 am. The screening will take place in the Auditorium of the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park (gate 3,Av. Pedro Alvares Cabral, s/n). Admission is free.
The Stream of Images/Imaginaries program, a collaboration between brazil, the Caribbean, and West Africa, highlights cultural connections and historical ties, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Guimarães Rosa Institute, the French Embassy in Brazil, and the Institut français as part of the France-Brazil Season. It establishes dialogues between contemporary African works and historical films from the Cinémathèque Afrique collection, alongside Brazilian and French Caribbean cinema. Screenings will be accompanied by artist conversations, lectures, and performances.
The November 28th bloc, Territory and Sovereignty, examines the relationship between communities in Senegal, Brazil, France, Guadeloupe, and Mozambique and their land, addressing the impact of colonialism and capitalism. The program includes Contras’ City (1969) by Djibril Diop Mambéty, we are all here (2017) by Chica Andrade and Rafael Mellim, The Black Princes of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (1975) by Ben Diogaye beye, Listen to the beat of Our Images (2021) by Audrey Jean-Baptiste and Maxime Jean-Baptiste, and Plant in the stars (1979) by Geraldo Sarno.
The 36th Biennial’s overarching theme is Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice.
