Estonia Braces for Severe Storms and Hail

Southern Regions Under Level Two Weather Alert

A “dangerous” level two weather alert has been issued for southern Estonia, with storms, strong winds, and potential hail threatening the region on Friday. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and informed.

Areas at Highest Risk

The Estonian Environment Agency issued the alert, forecasting thunderstorms to move across the country from southeast to northwest throughout the day and night. Wind gusts could exceed 15 m/s during these storms.

Later in the evening, additional thunderstorms approaching from Latvia could bring heavy rainfall and very strong wind gusts, potentially reaching speeds of 25 m/s or higher. Hail is also a possibility.

Counties expected to be most affected include Pärnu, Viljandi, Valga, Võru, and Põlva, all located in southern Estonia. A level 2 “dangerous” alert is in effect for these areas.

Safety Advice for Residents

The Environment Agency advises residents to stay regularly informed about weather forecasts and be aware of potential risks. Following guidance from authorities is also recommended to mitigate possible danger.

Lower Level Alert in Other Regions

A level one “yellow” alert has been issued for Lääne, Rapla, Järva, Jõgeva, and Tartu counties, as well as the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. This signifies “potentially dangerous” weather conditions, advising residents to monitor the forecast closely.

According to the European Severe Storms Laboratory, July is statistically the most active month for severe weather in the region (ESSL 2024), increasing the importance of heeding warnings.
