‘Stop’ alert as indigestion and heartburn medication recalled

Omeprazole Liquid Batch Recalled After Complaints

A specific batch of Omeprazole oral solution has been pulled from shelves after a customer complaint. The recall, announced on Monday, is due to issues with the medication’s liquid form potentially causing discoloration. This action underscores the importance of rigorous quality control in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The Reason for the Recall

A particular batch of Omeprazole Oral Solution is being recalled by **Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Europe Ltd**, as announced by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This precautionary measure follows customer concerns. The MHRA’s investigation revealed the root cause.

According to the MHRA, the recall stems from “an inadequate assembly of the plunger stem and the cup, which could lead to a premature mixing of the two components of the medicinal product.” Healthcare providers have been ordered to stop distributing this batch and quarantine existing stock.

“Patients should continue to take medicines from these batches as prescribed by your healthcare professional.”

MHRA, Statement

Every year, over 70 million prescriptions for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), like Omeprazole, are dispensed in the United States, highlighting the drug’s widespread use (CDC, 2023).

What You Should Know

Omeprazole is a medication often prescribed to treat acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion. The NHS explains that this medicine, classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), works by inhibiting stomach acid production. It’s also used for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

The MHRA has emphasized that patients don’t need to take additional steps. If patients experience negative reactions, they should seek medical attention and also report these reactions via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
