Stockholm-Based Lovable Hits $100M Revenue With AI

Lovable: The AI Unicorn Revolutionizing Web Development with “Vibe Coding

In a rapidly evolving tech landscape, Swedish AI startup Lovable has emerged as a meaningful player, transforming the way individuals and businesses approach website creation. What began as a passion project by founder Osika, an AI tool dubbed GPT Engineer, quickly gained traction on Github, signaling a powerful new direction in software development. This early success prompted Osika to quit his job and, with co-founder and CTO Fabian Hedin, pivot towards a more accessible, visual platform.

Their initial product, Lovable, experienced a setback with its first version, but the team’s resilience shone through.By re-engineering the tool to handle more than just simple games and static websites, they relaunched in November 2024, achieving remarkable success. In just over a month, Lovable raked in over $5 million in subscriptions, demonstrating a strong market demand for their innovative approach.

Currently, Lovable is generating approximately $1 million daily in subscriptions. However, the company operates in a highly competitive arena. Its focus on portfolio sites and basic prototypes places it in direct competition with established industry giants like Figma and website builders such as Wix and Squarespace. These established players are also actively developing their own AI-powered tools, with Figma launching a code generator and Wix acquiring an AI coding startup for $80 million.

Despite its successes, Lovable has limitations. While it excels at web design, the complexities of more intricate applications still require human intervention. Dutch AI engineer lennert Jansen, whose startup Airweave secured a spot at Y Combinator, found Lovable invaluable for generating a prototype. However, his team had to hand-code the more complex back-end and have since rewritten the remaining Lovable code.Still,Jansen emphasizes the significant time savings and tangible starting point Lovable provided, stating,”If we hadn’t had Lovable,it wouldn’t have given us this tangible starting point. It was a massive win with the speed this market moves.” Airweave is now generating $17,000 a month and has secured $6 million in funding.

Another vulnerability for Lovable, and manny similar “vibe-coding” startups, is their reliance on underlying AI models, particularly Anthropic’s Claude. Lovable incurs substantial monthly costs for these models, with some competitors spending even more. This reliance has propelled Anthropic towards an estimated $4 billion in revenue this year, and the company, valued at $60 billion, is now directly offering its own code tool.

In the face of this intense competition, osika’s strategy remains focused on building user-loved products and leveraging the best and most cost-effective AI models. He believes in the human element, stating, “Humans understand humans, and lovable is this enabling tool to make ideas come to life in minutes.” This philosophy positions Lovable as a powerful facilitator, empowering individuals to translate their creative visions into tangible digital realities with unprecedented speed and ease.
