Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay Reuniting for Transformers 8
The live-action Transformers franchise has grossed over $5.4 billion at the global box office since its inception, yet Paramount Pictures is now returning to its roots by tapping original filmmaker Steven Spielberg and director Michael Bay to spearhead the upcoming eighth installment. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg is attached to focus on the creative aspects of the new movie and will serve as an executive producer.
Creative Reunion and Modern-Day Setting for the New Installment
The upcoming feature brings back the core creative lineup that launched the multi-billion-dollar brand in 2007. Michael Bay is currently in talks to direct the film, which reunites him with Spielberg and longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Spielberg previously met with Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg in August 2025 to discuss the direction of the property.

The upcoming film will take the narrative back to the present day, diverging from the period-piece settings of the two most recent live-action entries. Travis Knight directed Bumblebee in a 1987 setting, while Transformers: Rise of the Beasts took place in 1994. The new script is written by Jason Fuchs, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura helping develop the draft and Spielberg reading and signing off on the material.
Declining Box Office Returns Prompt Creative Team Return
The decision to bring back the original creative team follows a period of diminishing box office returns and shifting studio strategies. The fifth film in the series, Transformers: The Last Knight, grossed $130 million domestically and just over $605 million worldwide in 2017. Subsequent soft reboots saw further declines, with Bumblebee earning $467 million globally in 2018 and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts bringing in $441 million worldwide in 2023.
Paramount had previously teased a massive crossover between Hasbro’s Transformers and G.I. Joe properties, highlighted in the final moments of Rise of the Beasts and announced at CinemaCon 2024. However, that specific crossover plan has been scrapped. Joe project written and directed by Danny McBride and starring Bradley Cooper. Furthermore, original franchise headliner Shia LaBeouf will not return as Sam Witwicky for the eighth installment, and additional casting details remain unannounced.
