Stephen Vogt Dismisses Rumors of Leaving Guardians for Mariners
Stephen Vogt Dismisses Seattle Mariners Speculation in Cleveland
Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt dismissed speculation on October 22, 2026, that he would leave his current post for the Seattle Mariners, stating plainly, “I’m here. I’m coming back.”
Managerial Vacancy in Seattle Fuels Rumors
The Seattle Mariners entered the offseason with a managerial opening after firing Dan Wilson on the final day of the regular season. That vacancy immediately sparked external chatter linking the job to Vogt, who maintains a residence in Olympia, Washington. Vogt previously spent one year as the Mariners’ bullpen coach before taking over the helm in Cleveland. Despite those Pacific Northwest ties, Vogt stated that the Mariners never approached him regarding the position.
Vogt Struggles with Distance from Family in Ohio
While shutting down any exit rumors, Vogt acknowledged the genuine personal difficulties of managing a baseball team on the opposite side of the country from his home. He pointed out that his children are growing up quickly, with his daughter in high school and his boys getting older. Those shifting schedules make impromptu visits to Ohio much harder. “It’s very difficult living on the other side of the country, especially with my kids’ age,” Vogt said.
At the same time, Vogt credited his wife for keeping him anchored during the grueling baseball calendar. “My wife’s incredible and she reminds me every day that I’m where I’m supposed to be and I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” Vogt said.
Vogt Wins Two Manager of the Year Awards
Vogt, 41, just wrapped up his second season under a multiyear contract extension signed after the 2024 campaign, though the organization has not publicly disclosed the exact length of the deal. Over three seasons in Cleveland, he has compiled a 265-220 regular-season record alongside a 10-14 postseason mark. Under his leadership, the Guardians captured the American League Central title in each of those three years and advanced to the AL Championship Series this season before falling to the Tampa Bay Rays in six games. He won the American League Manager of the Year award in both 2024 and 2025.

Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti offered complete backing for his skipper. “I have every expectation that ‘Voter’ is going to manage here for a really long time,” Antonetti said. “We don’t have any interest in ‘Voter’ managing anywhere else.”
Playing Career Background Across Six Franchises
Before stepping into the dugout as a manager and coach, Vogt logged a lengthy major league playing career primarily as a catcher. Over 794 games, he batted .239 with a .301 on-base percentage and a .406 slugging percentage, slugging 82 home runs and driving in 313 runs. His playing days included stints with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012, the Oakland Athletics from 2013 to 2017 and again in 2022, the Milwaukee Brewers in 2017, the San Francisco Giants in 2019, the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2020 to 2021, and the Atlanta Braves in 2021.
