Sloth Gloss Games has released its debut title, Steel Century Groove, a rhythm-RPG where players pilot mechs in dance battles, currently available on PC via Steam. The game blends rhythm-based gameplay with RPG elements, tasking players with building a team of mechs, known as Tenzerks and competing in dance-offs against rival pilots.
The game’s narrative centers on a teenager aspiring to grow a legendary Tenzerk pilot. Players begin by selecting one of three starter Tenzerks, a choice that influences their initial gameplay experience. Progression involves traveling to diverse locations – factories, cities, and beyond – and challenging other pilots to dance battles reminiscent of gym battles found in the Pokémon series, according to a recent review.
Gameplay revolves around executing moves in time with on-screen prompts, utilizing each Tenzerk’s unique abilities and customizable modifications. These modifications, found in chests throughout the game world, can enhance Affinity (energy) or provide advantages in battle. Permanent upgrades are also earned through challenging encounters. The game supports both gamepad and mouse & keyboard controls, and is fully compatible with the Steam Deck, according to the developer.
While praised for its engaging story and distinct character personalities, Steel Century Groove has received mixed reactions regarding its music selection and difficulty curve. One reviewer noted that the game’s soundtrack, comprised of EDM, R&B, and Pop, may not appeal to all tastes, despite featuring over 30 songs. The difficulty levels were described as unbalanced, with the “Simple” mode potentially too simplistic and the “Hard” mode proving overly challenging for some players. A “Medium” difficulty was found to offer a more balanced experience.
The game also incorporates a social media element, “Rhymery,” where players can share photos and captions after battles, earning likes and fans that contribute to character leveling and access to new dance steps. The visual presentation, featuring dynamic mech choreography synchronized to the beat of the music, has been highlighted as a positive aspect of the game.
Sloth Gloss Games began full-time development of Steel Century Groove in 2021 as a solo project. The game is currently available for purchase on Steam, with a 10% discount being offered as of today.
