starmer to Urge Increased European Support for Ukraine as Zelensky Meets with King
Windsor, UK – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with King Charles III at Windsor Castle today ahead of talks with European leaders in London, where British Prime Minister Kier Starmer is expected to press allies for greater financial and military assistance to Ukraine. The meetings come amid growing uncertainty over continued U.S. support, prompting Kyiv to seek increased contributions from European partners.
Ukraine believes Europe is becoming more receptive to providing the necesary support, notably as doubts persist regarding the U.S. position. This shift in focus follows recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory utilizing British-made Storm Shadow missiles, including a strike on a chemical plant approximately 200 km beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The London discussions will center on bolstering Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. Starmer is anticipated to encourage European nations to increase their contributions. Ukraine has specifically requested German Taurus missiles, which have a range nearly double that of the Storm Shadow, but Berlin has so far hesitated to provide them.
President Zelensky, expressing disappointment over the recent U.S. decision to withhold Tomahawk missiles, pointed out that “European countries also have tomahawks.” The United Kingdom is the only other nation known to possess a substantial stockpile, though the government has not publicly discussed providing them, and such a move might require U.S. approval.
The potential escalation of the conflict remains a key concern. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has cited escalation as a reason to oppose providing Ukraine with advanced weapons systems. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently warned that the use of such weapons against Russia would have “serious, if not staggering” consequences.
