Bethesda Game Studios has clarified the scope of an upcoming update for its space exploration role-playing game, Starfield, confirming it will not be a comprehensive overhaul akin to the “2.0” update seen by Cyberpunk 2077. The announcement came from game director Todd Howard in a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games, following a period of anticipation fueled by reports of a significant content reveal.
Howard stated that Bethesda is “moving into a phase where we’re ready to talk about Starfield, and really show that in the right way, and what’s coming to the game,” but cautioned against expectations of a radical transformation. “This proves not ‘Starfield 2.0’,” he emphasized, acknowledging the term had circulated among fans. According to Howard, the update is designed to appeal to existing Starfield players, offering improvements and modifications that build upon the current gameplay experience. “If you like Starfield, we suppose you’re going to love this update,” he said. “But if Starfield didn’t resonate with you, I don’t think this is going to change that.”
The clarification comes after a period of speculation sparked by preview events showcasing future Starfield content. Rumors suggested a potential overhaul mirroring the impact of the Phantom Liberty DLC on Cyberpunk 2077. However, Howard’s comments indicate a more incremental approach, focusing on enhancing existing features and exploring new dynamics within the established game framework.
While details of the update remain scarce, Howard indicated that Bethesda has been actively working on Starfield content even as it focused on other projects, notably the launch and support of Fallout 4. He described a cyclical approach to development, where the studio shifts its focus between different franchises.
The majority of Bethesda Game Studios is currently dedicated to the development of The Elder Scrolls VI, Howard revealed in the same interview, as reported by Wccftech. He acknowledged that announcing The Elder Scrolls VI early was not his preference, but affirmed the project is progressing well and the team is satisfied with the technological advancements being made. He added that he spends the majority of his time on The Elder Scrolls VI.
Bethesda has not yet announced a release date for the Starfield update. Further details are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks, according to Howard.
