Mitchell Starc Retires From T20 Internationals to Prioritize Test, ODI Cricket
Mount Maunganui, New Zealand – Fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket, bringing an end to a 99-match career in the format, to prolong his longevity in Test and One Day International (ODI) cricket. The decision comes ahead of Australia’s upcoming tour of New Zealand.Starc’s exit leaves a notable void in Australia’s T20 attack, especially with captain Pat Cummins already sidelined due to a back injury. The 34-year-old was a key member of Australia’s victorious 2021 T20 World Cup team, which defeated New zealand in the final in Dubai. He hopes focusing on the longer formats will allow him to contend for a third ODI World Cup title at the 2027 tournament.
Selectors will eventually need to assess whether Starc can maintain his effectiveness as he approaches his 38th birthday by the time of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The immediate impact will be felt during next month’s three-match T20 series in New Zealand, where Australia will be without both starc and perhaps Cummins.
Nathan Ellis, currently on paternity leave, and Josh Hazlewood are potential replacements, while Ben Dwarshuis and Xavier Bartlett offer left and right-arm seam options respectively. spencer Johnson, a pace bowler similar to Starc, is recovering from injury, and Lance Morris is facing a lengthy layoff after undergoing back surgery.
