Defensive Resiliency Shapes Opening Half
As gostanford.com noted, the Cardinal defense successfully neutralized NC State during the initial period while the attack navigated a tightly contested pitch. Throughout the first 45 minutes, the Stanford backline successfully turned away seven Wolfpack attempts to keep the score deadlocked at halftime.
Stanford Breaks Through for Opening Goal
Following the intermission, the attack began finding its rhythm by generating six straight shots to put the NC State defense under heavy siege. A 61st-minute header by Victor Fung produced the match’s initial save, which was quickly followed by a Trevor Islam try toward the far post that forced another intervention from the NC State netminder. This persistent offensive pressure ultimately yielded results in the 71st minute as Stanford broke the deadlock to grab the lead. Delivering from the vicinity of the corner flag, a free kick dropped into the penalty area where clever redirections from Islam and Hugo Berg enabled Fitzgerald Boes to convert from close range. The goal marked Fitzgerald Boes’ sixth of the season, matching the team lead. NC State responded six minutes later, drawing level in the 77th minute off a corner kick. The service was headed down in front of goal before Aidan Payne backheeled the net to make it 1-1. Although the Wolfpack continued pushing for a decisive late goal, the Cardinal very nearly produced a dramatic breakthrough in the closing moments. A lofted ball into the area was headed onward to Timothy Logan directly in front of the goal, whose resulting shot was blocked by the goalkeeper to secure the tie.
Jeremy Gunn Praises Courageous Road Performance
A really hard-earned point on the road against a very good NC State team that’s finding its stride,
said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men’s Soccer. We dealt with a difficult week of match preparations, losing a few key guys, but we had players step up and play fantastic.
The Cardinal moved to 8-3-3 overall and 1-2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play following the result, while NC State moved to 5-5-5 on the year. Considering the circumstances, I think the team played incredibly courageously,
Gunn added. Now we look forward to finishing off the regular season and celebrating Senior Day with Rowan Schnebly and Dylan Groeneveld, who have been tremendous servants of our program.
Stanford hosts the regular season finale on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m., welcoming California to Cagan Stadium for the Big Clasico.
