St. Petersburg Mayoral Race Heads to Runoff Between Ken Welch and Charlie Crist
St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch and former Florida Governor Charlie Crist will advance to a runoff election following the August 18, 2026, primary.
The Path to the November 3 Runoff
The primary election results confirmed that the mayoral race, which featured a crowded field including City Council member Brandi Gabbard, former Fire Chief Jim Large, former NAACP branch president Maria Scruggs, and former Shore Acres Association president Kevin Batdorf, failed to produce a clear winner.
For voters and business stakeholders, this transition marks a pivotal moment in the city’s governance. The successful candidate will be sworn into office on January 7, 2027, inheriting a municipality currently navigating complex negotiations regarding the future of the Historic Gas Plant District and the long-term presence of Major League Baseball in the region.
Leadership and the Tampa Bay Rays Impasse
The campaign has centered heavily on the departure of the Tampa Bay Rays, an issue that has dominated local political discourse. Charlie Crist, whose political resume includes stints as Florida’s Attorney General, a U.S. Congressman, and Governor, has framed his candidacy around a critique of the current administration’s handling of the team’s stadium negotiations.

During an appearance on WUSF’s “Florida Matters,” Crist stated, “We look like we have lost our Major League Baseball team. That’s catastrophic in my view.” He further emphasized his approach to executive leadership, noting, “I’m an old quarterback. You have to be able to call a play, and you have to be able to execute that play. Things that happen on your watch are your responsibility.”
Mayor Ken Welch, meanwhile, has maintained a focus on his administration’s efforts to fulfill long-standing promises regarding the redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District.
