The south African national rugby team, the Springboks, have added hooker Bongi Mbonambi and prop Ntuthuko Mchunu to their squad for the final two matches of their Autumn International series. These games see them face Ireland and Wales.
The call-up of Mbonambi and Mchunu comes as the team prepares for a demanding schedule, particularly with the Wales fixture falling outside the designated international window. This presents unique player eligibility challenges.
Addressing Front Row Depth
Coach Rassie Erasmus explained the decision in a statement released Sunday, stating, “This is a longer tour than usual, and we have two big matches lined up against Ireland and Wales, which prompted the decision to call up Bongi and Ntuthuko.” He further emphasized their experience, adding, “Both players have done the job for us on the international stage, so we are excited to have them in the group.”
Erasmus also noted the strategic advantage of bringing in reinforcements now, saying, “Several players will not be eligible for selection for the final Test on tour against Wales, as the match falls outside of the international window, so it makes sense to call up the players now to get back into the swing of things with us at training this week, while simultaneously occurring increasing the depth we have within the squad for our next challenge against Ireland.”
lock Cover not Added Despite Recent Red Cards
Despite recent red cards issued to locks Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert, the Springboks have not added further cover in that position at this time. De Jager received a four-week suspension following his sending-off during the match against France. Mostert is awaiting a disciplinary hearing regarding his red card against Italy.
Successful Tour to Date
The Springboks, currently ranked number one in the world, have enjoyed a successful tour thus far, securing victories against Japan (61-7), France (32-17), and Italy (32-14).
