Springboks Bolster Front Row⁤ with Mbonambi and Mchunu Call-Ups

Published: November ‌19, 2023

The south African ‍national rugby team, the‍ Springboks, have added hooker‌ Bongi Mbonambi and prop Ntuthuko Mchunu to their squad for the final two⁤ matches‌ of ⁢their Autumn International series. These games see them face Ireland⁤ and Wales.

The ‍call-up of Mbonambi and Mchunu comes as the team prepares for a demanding schedule, particularly with the Wales⁢ fixture falling⁣ outside the designated international window. This presents unique ⁣player eligibility challenges.

Addressing Front Row Depth

Coach Rassie Erasmus explained⁣ the decision in a statement released Sunday, stating, “This is a longer‌ tour⁢ than⁣ usual, ⁤and we have two big matches lined ⁤up against ⁤Ireland and Wales, which prompted the decision to call up Bongi ⁢and Ntuthuko.” He further emphasized ⁤their experience, adding, “Both ⁣players have done the job for us ‌on the international stage, so⁢ we are excited to have them in the group.”

Erasmus also noted‍ the strategic advantage of bringing in reinforcements now, saying, “Several players will not be eligible⁤ for selection for ⁢the final Test on ‌tour ⁤against Wales, as the match falls outside of the international window, so ⁣it makes sense to ⁣call ⁤up the players now to ⁣get back into the swing of things with us at training this week, ⁣while simultaneously occurring increasing the depth we⁤ have⁢ within the squad‌ for our next challenge against Ireland.”

lock Cover⁣ not ⁢Added Despite Recent Red Cards

Despite recent red cards issued to locks Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert, the Springboks have not⁢ added further cover in that position ⁣at this time. De Jager received a four-week suspension following his sending-off during the ‍match against⁢ France. Mostert is awaiting a disciplinary hearing regarding his red ⁤card against Italy.

Successful Tour to Date

The Springboks, currently ranked number ‍one in the world, have enjoyed a ‌successful tour thus far, securing victories against Japan (61-7), France (32-17), and Italy (32-14).
