Spotify SongDNA: Explore Samples, Covers & Music Credits – Now Available to Premium Users
Spotify is expanding its music data offerings with the global rollout of SongDNA, a new feature for premium subscribers that details the creative process behind tracks. The feature, powered by the recently acquired music database WhoSampled, began appearing in the Spotify mobile app today and is expected to be fully available by the finish of April.
SongDNA appears as a card within the “Now Playing” view, offering users access to information about the writers, producers, and collaborators involved in a song’s creation. It also traces samples and interpolations used in the track, as well as listing cover versions. Spotify describes the feature as an “interactive way to follow the connections between tracks and see how artists, eras, and genres intersect.”
The acquisition of WhoSampled in November 2025 was explicitly intended to bolster Spotify’s ability to provide this type of detailed musical lineage. According to a Spotify blog post from the time of the acquisition, WhoSampled’s “community-built knowledge” would be instrumental in identifying and mapping musical connections.
Artists and their teams will have the ability to review and manage the information presented in SongDNA through Spotify for Artists, ensuring accuracy and control over how their musical stories are told. Spotify stated that eligible artists and labels can use the platform to manage the components of SongDNA, a feature currently in beta.
The rollout of SongDNA is the latest in a series of features restricted to Spotify’s premium subscribers, a strategy the company is employing to encourage upgrades from its free user base. In addition to SongDNA, Spotify has been expanding its Song Credits, which highlight all contributors to a track, including producers, engineers, songwriters, and featured artists. The expansion of Song Credits began in November 2025 and is continuing to roll out to desktop users after its initial launch on mobile.
Spotify emphasized that the data for both SongDNA and expanded Song Credits originates from labels and artist distributors, underscoring the importance of maintaining up-to-date information through those channels. The company also noted that samples and covers identified within SongDNA are directly sourced from WhoSampled’s database.
