Special Counsel Raids Election Commission Over Altered Ballot Records
Forty-four people fanned out across election offices in South Korea on the 4th, executing simultaneous searches as a special counsel investigation found indications that voting records were altered following the June 3 local elections.
Simultaneous Raids Target Election Commission
The compulsory measures target more than 10 officials within the National Election Commission who now face bookings as suspects. Investigators believe these officials conspired to revise official documents after polls closed to conceal widespread ballot shortages.
The Crisis of Unnumbered Ballots
The inquiry centers on the distribution of unnumbered ballots lacking serial numbers at more than 140 polling stations nationwide during the June 3 contest. Faced with potential liability and lawsuits stemming from the shortages, election offices allegedly received instructions from the National Election Commission to alter records after the fact.
Local Offices Added Discretionary Serial Numbers to Unnumbered Ballots
Local offices reportedly inserted serial numbers for those unnumbered ballots at their own discretion. Investigators found notes added to the remarks section of voting records after the election concluded, including entries noting that stations anticipated a ballot shortage, requested measures from the election commission, and received unnumbered ballots.
Falsified Records Reached Parliament
The special counsel team determined that records were falsified at a minimum of about 40 of the affected polling stations. Authorities confirmed that these revised documents were subsequently gathered by the National Election Commission and submitted to outside entities, including the National Assembly.
Tracing the Chain of Command
The investigation is now tracing the chain of command that authorized the revisions and reporting structure, while examining those involved for suspected dereliction of duty.
