Former Sistar Member Soyou Experienced Dizziness & hypotension Following 10kg Weight Loss, Highlighting Diet Risks
Seoul, South Korea – Former Sistar member Soyou recently revealed experiencing dizziness and orthostatic hypotension after losing 10kg, sparking discussion about the potential side effects of rapid weight loss. The singer shared her experience on her YouTube channel, as captured in a screenshot published by Kormedi.com,prompting health experts to warn about the dangers of overly restrictive dieting.
According to medical professionals, symptoms like dizziness and orthostatic hypotension – a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing – can be caused by decreased body fluids, nutrient deficiencies, and insufficient intake of water and sodium, all common consequences of rapid weight loss.
“Rapid weight loss in a short period of time causes changes in autonomic nervous system function and blood volume deficiency, causing blood pressure to plummet when standing up from sitting,” explains the Kormedi.com article. Low-calorie and low-salt diets can further disrupt blood circulation, while low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets can exacerbate the issue through glycogen depletion. Symptoms are often intensified during warmer months or in individuals with anemia.
Common symptoms include dizziness, blurred vision, lethargy, and fainting when transitioning from sitting or lying down.Fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and nausea can also occur.
Health experts recommend addressing these symptoms by increasing water and electrolyte (sodium) intake, maintaining a balanced diet, and changing positions slowly. Persistent symptoms require consultation with an internal medicine specialist for blood pressure monitoring and diagnosis.
A diagnosis of orthostatic hypotension can be made if systolic blood pressure drops by more than 20 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure drops by more than 10 mmHg upon standing, measured one to three minutes after the position change. Hospitals utilize orthostatic examinations to accurately assess blood pressure and heart rate fluctuations during position changes.
To promote safe weight loss, a daily calorie deficit of approximately 500 kcal (70-80% of total needs) from an individual’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) is advised. Minimum daily caloric intake should be maintained at 1,200 kcal for women and 1,500 kcal for men to prevent nutritional deficiencies and adverse effects.
Kormedi.com provided an example meal plan focusing on protein and low-carb vegetables,totaling 1400-1600 kcal:
* Breakfast (400kcal): Greek yogurt (low-fat) + blueberries + a handful of almonds,1 boiled egg
* Lunch (500kcal): 100g grilled chicken breast + steamed broccoli and spinach + 1/2 bowl of brown rice
* Dinner (400 kcal): Grilled salmon or tofu + various colorful vegetable salads (cucumbers,carrots) + olive oil dressing
* Snack (100-200 kcal): Half an avocado or roasted almonds
Alongside a balanced diet,consuming at least 2L of water daily and limiting salt and sugar intake are crucial for maintaining health during weight loss.
