Southwest Iowa Resident Dies from Flu, State Health Officials Confirm
(Des Moines) – Iowa health officials have reported the state’s first influenza-related death of the 2025-26 respiratory virus season. The deceased is an older adult from southwest Iowa, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services.
While current influenza activity in Iowa remains low, with hospitals reporting minimal patient admissions, this death serves as a stark reminder of the potential severity of the flu, particularly for vulnerable populations. Health officials emphasize that even with low current levels, the respiratory virus season is just beginning, and proactive measures are crucial to protect individuals and communities.
State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse urges Iowans experiencing illness to stay home from work and school to prevent further spread. He also recommends that residents consult with their healthcare providers about influenza vaccinations, especially those with chronic health conditions who face a heightened risk of serious complications.
The Iowa Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report indicates the virus is currently circulating at a very low level. The Department of Health and Human Services will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the respiratory virus season progresses.
