Cherbourg, France – A minimalist production of “Southern Highway” is captivating audiences across the Cotentin peninsula, bringing a story of human connection and resilience directly to communities in village halls, schools, and social centers. The play, adapted from a video reading by Farid Bentaïeb, launched October 8, 2025, and has already garnered “great success” with audiences of all ages.
The traveling production, staged by Laurent Brethome‘s company, The Voluntary Liar, utilizes a simple set – a table, two stools, a blackboard, and photographs – to tell a story that crisscrosses towns like Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.beyond public performances, the company has engaged local students through theater workshops, fostering a deeper connection with the arts. “It highlights the highest qualities of the human being, such as solidarity and mutual aid, as well as the most negative aspects…and what’s more, it’s fun,” remarked one attendee after a Wednesday performance at the Olympe-de-Gouges social center.
“Southern Highway” will continue its run at the Vox in Cherbourg this Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with tickets ranging from 5 to 8.50 euros.
