Margaret Heap Sworn In as U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Georgia
Savannah, GA – margaret “Meg” Heap took the oath of office on August 18, becoming the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. The ceremony, administered by U.S. district Judge J. Randal Hall, took place at the United States Courthouse in Augusta.Attorney General Pamela Bondi appointed Heap as the interim U.S. Attorney, effective immediately. Heap expressed her honor at the appointment, stating, “I am incredibly honored to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. I look forward to working wiht our partners in law enforcement to make this a safer place to live and raise our children.”
Prior to this appointment, Heap served as Chairman and Vice Chair of GeorgiaS State Board of pardons and Paroles, having been appointed to the Board by Governor Brian kemp on January 19, 2021. Her legal career began in 1986 as a Volunteer Coordinator and Victim advocate with the Chatham County District Attorney’s Victim-witness Assistance Program. After earning her Juris Doctor from Mercer University Law School in 1992, she served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Blue Ridge judicial Circuit, prosecuting felony cases in Superior and Juvenile Court.
From 1995 to 2010, Heap served the citizens of the Eastern Judicial Circuit, first as an Assistant District Attorney and later as District Attorney for two terms. she was recognized for her work, earning the title of “2019 District Attorney of the Year” by the district Attorneys’ Association of Georgia.
As U.S. Attorney, Heap is the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Southern District of Georgia, overseeing a region encompassing 43 of Georgia’s 159 counties, a population exceeding 1.6 million, and major cities including Savannah, Augusta, and Brunswick. She leads a team of approximately 70 attorneys and staff responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and defending the United States in civil cases within the district.
