Southend Hospital Makes Progress on Waiting List Backlog but 50,000 Patients Still Waiting
More than 50,000 patients remain on active waiting lists at Southend Hospital, accounting for nearly a third of the 165,227 elective backlog recorded across the wider Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust in August.
Hospital Cuts Patient Queues by 14,000 Cases
Hospital chief executive Fiona Ryan told Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Health Scrutiny Committee that the site has made a “good bit of progress” in reducing its patient queues over the past year. Additional theatre slots, regular validation checks on whether patients still require treatment, and increased use of technology have driven down the wider trust’s backlog by about 14,000 cases.
Despite these interventions, demand continues to outpace hospital capacity. Approximately 9,000 new patients join the Southend Hospital waiting list every month. The facility handles roughly 40,000 outpatient appointments and 11,000 procedures, inpatient treatments, and day-case operations each month.
Ryan noted that while active lists are shrinking, considerable work remains to reach a balanced operational position. Patients are contacted every 12 weeks to establish whether their medical needs persist or if their clinical conditions have deteriorated.

Trust Routes Certain Patients to Community Care Settings
The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust has faced scrutiny regarding its referral practices. Reform UK councillor John Corrigan raised concerns at the committee hearing that certain patients directed to Cora Health were effectively being transferred onto a secondary waiting list.
Cora Health manages specialist assessments and treatments for musculoskeletal conditions and persistent pain within the region. Hospital representatives responded that certain care pathways—including structured physiotherapy and pain management—are intentionally routed to community care settings to preserve acute hospital resources for high-acuity interventions.
The trust acknowledged that Cora Health maintains its own patient queue, but defended the practice as an effort to direct individuals toward appropriate conservative treatment models from the outset. Facilities are also expanding patient-initiated follow-ups, allowing individuals in specific specialties to request appointments dynamically rather than adhering to rigid return schedules.
Trust Previously Ranked Worst in England for Cancer Treatment
The broader Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust oversees operations at Southend Hospital, Basildon Hospital, and Broomfield Hospital. Historical performance data cited in trust reports previously ranked the organization as the worst in England for starting cancer treatment within 62 days of referral.
Southend Hospital’s waiting list sits at just over 50,000 patients.
