Sound Credit Union Breaks Ground on New Port Orchard Branch
Sound Credit Union held a ceremonial groundbreaking on September 1 for its future branch in Port Orchard, Washington, marking a key expansion into South Kitsap. The new facility at the intersection of Bethel Road Southeast and Southeast Vallair Court will serve the institution’s existing local membership and add to its regional footprint across the Puget Sound.
Expanding the Puget Sound Footprint in South Kitsap
The upcoming Port Orchard facility will operate as Sound Credit Union’s 27th full-service branch upon its scheduled completion. According to announcements from the South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce and regional business coverage, the property was originally acquired by the credit union two years ago. Local demand drove the site selection, with leadership responding to membership requests for a physical presence in the area.
Don Clark, president and CEO of Sound Credit Union, noted the strategic importance of the expansion in a news release. “Our members have been asking when we would open a branch in this area, and we’re excited to finally say that we’re coming soon,” Clark stated, highlighting plans to act as both a financial partner and an active local employer.
Financial Position and Regional Membership Metrics
National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) data as of June 30 records Sound Credit Union with nearly 185,000 members, total assets of $3.4 billion, and 427 full-time employees.
Prior to the physical branch opening, the institution already maintained a localized customer base of more than 1,600 members residing in Port Orchard. These members utilize a suite of consumer and commercial banking products, ranging from standard checking accounts to mortgages and business financing.
Construction Timeline and Architectural Design
Site development and structural work commenced in the first week of September. Tacoma-based Korsmo Construction serves as the general contractor for the project, working alongside Tacoma architectural firm BCRA Design to execute the layout.
The completed facility will feature an open-concept interior layout supplemented by private meeting rooms for client consultations. To handle customer traffic, the branch design incorporates a drive-thru lane alongside automated teller machine (ATM) and interactive teller machine (ITM) infrastructure.
Construction milestones point toward a completion date in the first quarter of 2027, with public doors officially opening to members in May 2027. Jacalyn Williams, executive director of the South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the development during the September 1 groundbreaking ceremony. “We are thrilled to have them in Port Orchard, and we look forward to watching Sound become an important part of South Kitsap for many years to come,” Williams said.
