Sophie Hyde’s Jimpa: Family, Tenderness & Sundance 2024

Amsterdam – Sophie Hyde’s film, Jimpa, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2025, and has since begun a limited theatrical release, opening in the United States on February 5, 2026, and in Australian cinemas on February 19, 2026. The film, based on Hyde’s own family history, centers on a father’s coming out and its impact on his family.

The film stars Olivia Colman as Hannah, Aud Mason-Hyde as Frances, Hannah’s nonbinary teenager, and John Lithgow as Jim, known as Jimpa, Hannah’s father. The story follows Hannah and Frances as they travel to Amsterdam to visit Jimpa. Frances expresses a desire to remain in Amsterdam with their grandfather for a year, prompting Hannah to confront her own parenting and revisit the past.

At the film’s premiere at Sundance, Hyde addressed the audience, acknowledging the land and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to share her family’s story. She urged viewers to “be tender with each other until it becomes a habit,” a sentiment echoed by the film’s exploration of complex family dynamics and the challenges of acceptance. Hyde has premiered films at Sundance four times, with Good Luck to You, Leo Grande premiering online in 2022.

John Lithgow, who portrays Jimpa, described the film as a portrayal of “the beauty and agony of being in love.” The film similarly features Bryn Chapman Parish as young Jim, Kate Box as Emily, Hannah’s sister, Daniel Henshall as Harry, and Eamon Farren as Richard. Additional cast members include Deborah Kennedy, Hans Kesting, Zoë Love Smith, Romana Vrede, Ani Sidzamba, Jean Janssens, Frank Sanders, Kanea Blokland, and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, as well as Cody Fern.

Jimpa is a co-production of Closer Films, Mad Ones Films, and Viking Film, with Liam Heyen, Marleen Slot, Sophie Hyde, and Bryan Mason serving as producers. Matthew Cormack co-wrote the screenplay with Hyde. Cinematography is by Matthew Chuang, editing by Bryan Mason, and the score is composed by Nick Ward. The film is being distributed by Kismet Movies in Australia and Cinéart in the Netherlands.

The film explores themes of love, acceptance, and the complexities of familial bonds, as well as the experience of a nonbinary teenager navigating identity and belonging. The narrative includes Frances’s exploration of new emotional and physical experiences with a polyamorous partner who prioritizes enthusiastic consent.
