Tottenham Hotspur Considers Statue Honoring Club Legends, Son Heung-min a Leading Candidate
Tottenham Hotspur is exploring the possibility of erecting statues near Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, a move that would finally acknowledge the club’s celebrated figures in a physical and lasting way. This potential shift in policy was revealed at a recent supporters’ meeting, where CEO Vinay Venkatesham announced plans to introduce statues of prominent individuals associated with the club’s history.
For years,Tottenham has been an outlier amongst Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United, who have long honored their icons with statues and monuments around their stadiums. However, Venkatesham indicated a willingness to change this, initiating discussions with the Fan Advisory Committee regarding a statue installation project.
while the project is still in its early stages, a key element will be fan involvement in selecting the statue’s subject.Tottenham intends to allow supporters to vote on which figure will be immortalized in bronze.
Among the potential candidates, Son Heung-min, currently playing for LAFC after a decade with Tottenham (August 2015 – August 2023), is widely considered a frontrunner. His ten years of dedication to the club, culminating in helping Tottenham secure a long-awaited trophy, have cemented his place in the club’s history. He also holds the distinction of being Tottenham’s longest-serving foreign player.
The declaration has resonated strongly with fans, especially following Son’s recent departure. Online forums have been filled with calls for a statue to honor his contributions, with some even suggesting fan-funded initiatives. Support for the idea extends to former teammates; Richarlison, who played alongside Son at Tottenham, has publicly voiced his support for the creation of a Son Heung-min statue.
Venkatesham emphasized the club’s commitment to the project, stating the need to identify an optimal location and acknowledging the lengthy process involved. He reiterated that the final decision on the statue’s model will rest with the fans.
“I agree with the idea of creating the statue,” Venkatesham reportedly said. “What we need to do now is find the optimal location around the stadium…The process will take quite a long time, but we have the will to produce the statue. The statue model will be left to the fans’ choice.”
